Is it the white mould? If so, just wipe it off with a damp cloth. It is perfectly harmless to tack, the mould I mean.

I'm not sure that's completely true, but I'd say that mould spores anywhere are a bad idea for health, for buildings etc. White vinegar is great but it can stain leather if you use too much, @cremedemonthe has a sheet on mould, he takes it seriously (he makes the BEST leather conditioner which has a certain amount of preventative in it).

Maybe I'm a bit blasé but it's never bothered me. I just wipe it off and don't give ut a moment's thought. Pretty difficult to avoid in our climate unless you have a heated tack room.

Once mould spores are within leather they seem to regrow. I have some leather boots that once were stored in a bag in a cold barn when moving. They were mouldy all over with white mould, i cleaned them with vinegar to kill spores and dried them thoroughly by an open fire for 48hrs...then put black shoe wax on them....and stored them again in an airtight bag yet mould regrew! So i cleaned again and mould regrew. Arrghhh!
I imagine using as mentioned a leather cream with some antimould ingredient that can soak in and kill the spores. Several applications.
I hope you manage to rescue your tack!

I washed my tack in warm water and liquid soap in the summer and finally got rid of the mould as it used to grow constantly - I've put an old salt lick in a pot in the tack room and the moisture level is still wet but loads better than it was - unheated tackroom in old farm buildings = very wet whitewashed walls

I just wash dry and then soap

And I have a theory that soap feeds the mould, no good scientific reason to use saddle soap these days with such great conditioners, but I know it works for some.

Yep it grows back, I had a pair of beautiful Spanish boots that got mould in a wardrobe and although the white vinegar got rid of it I used too much on one part of the boot and got a big black stain on lovely brown waxy leather . Oz (cremedemonthe)'s sheet is recommended, I'm sure he'll be on at some point but anyone can pm him or find him at unicornleather.co.uk.

I use both rapide elder gel being my favourite although it needs to used sparingly .
Of what you really need is a dry rack room so as the damp weather starts I turn on the heating .

I previously used to just wipe mould away.
I’ve since read Creme de Menths advice on cleaning mouldy tack and died a little inside!
Pm him, he will send you the info, it’s an interesting read.
