My horse has been turned away since summer - i have lots of pieces of tack laying around such as reins/headcollars stirrup leathers etc, all leather some better quality than others.
I had a good sort of a few months back, cleaned everything with saddle spray (one that prevents mould) and have hung up all the reins in the house inside a wardrobe i have - there are around 5 pairs hanging together. The room has central heating as its in the house so no damp etc. However just opened it up to discover green leather  it was cleaned and dried and been stored away so why is it still going mouldy??
My bridle (everyday one which was expensive) was treated the same way but hung in a bridle bag in the same place but hasnt gone mouldy - neither has my half leather saddle which is covered in the same room. Just seems its odd bits of leather which has moulded.
Does the quailty of the leather determine how mouldy it goes???
Where am i going wrong??

Any tips?

Thanks

What brand of saddle soap did you use? And has any of the leather ever been exposed to mould before?

I find a lot of brands turn mouldy, so use a dressing for storing tack.
Also mould spores will live in nooks and crannies and re-emerge so giving the tack a quick clean will mean it will be mouldy again soon, you need to give it a thorough wash, disinfect it and apply a dressing which has anti-fungal properties. :)

Also try storing it in a bridle bag, I had a cotton one which helps it to breath but keep the mould spore off :)

Store the leather in a plastic bag.

The mold means that there was moisture in the leather and actually mold is not a bad sign.

For stuff to store for a long time, cover with a layer of vaseline after cleaning the leather well. Hang inside a plastic bag.

I never seem to have this problem and much of my tack hasn't been used for a decade or more - spends more of it's time being used as teaching examples for Pony Club. People always remark on how lovely and supple it is.

Mine is washed with warm water with a dash of washing up liquid. Allowed to dry and a light layerof oil painted on the underside if the leather needs it.

Then the outside of show gear is treated with clear bootpolish and the underside with GLycerine saddle soap. Bridles are hung up in the spare room which although cold is not a damp room.

One thing you could do is to wash all the tack with warm water with a squirt of Nizoral in the water or Canestan Inwash Liquid in the water.
