Mouldy tack

Davie's tack quickly becomes mouldy when not used for a few days. It's kept in the tack room as is everyone elses....yet no other tack goes mouldy even though it is used less! Getting really peed off with it. Anyone know if I can treat it with something to prevent this as I don't have room in the house to bring it home?

Usually its a good sign when the tack goes mouldy as it shows that there is moisture in the leather which also makes it stay supple.

Maybe hang it up outside in the warm, for the day - just make sure when you clean it that you don't use a dripping wet cloth, if it gets rained on or thoroughly wet give it time to dry out before using saddle soap on it.

If you are really worried about it try a leather conditioner that has Eucalyptus in it.

Hi, Sounds like tack has mould spores in it, you have to kill them all to stop it coming back. We have some scientific cleaning woman here in Australia she's very popular (on TV and published a few books).

She swears by vinegar to kil mould, 80/20 vinegar and water spray item thoroughly and air dry. Smell will vanish. I don't know how that would affect leather but lots of leather conditioner once dry should prevent any permenant damage. Good luck with it, sounds really annoying.

The mould rarely ever does any damage - using something acidic on the leather on the other hand can damage the leather.

Tack has been going mouldy forever and a wipe with a damp cloth with some glycerine will remove it. Tack that does not develop any mould I would be highly suspect of as it will have dried out and become weakened.

Often tack stored wet will go mouldy if not in a sufficiently airy environment or an already damp environment.

Allow excess moisture to dry out of it, before soaping or oiling, then hang in a dry airy environment.

You could get a dehumidifier for the tack room, thats what we so and it works a treat

If you want to stop it coming back Ko-cho-line works well. My treated martingale is mould free while the untreated headcollar is lovely and cloudy (It was hiding and is being cleaned today). Think Robinsons stock it regularly.

Take it home and keep it in the house. The dampness of the tack room is making it mouldy. I know it's a pain taking it home but my tack always stays in better condition if I do that rather than leave it in the tack room.

put it in the passenger car well to get it dried out, and saddle at home for a few days.
