Has anyone elses horse started to moult?

My lovely bright bay WB has quite quickly changed to a darker colour and has sprouted slightly longer hair, albeit only about a mm! :( He really feels the cold and is already in a 150g rug at night.

Only seems like summer lasted 5 minutes!

Yes! Mine leave balls of hair in the belly cover of the Boett. I haven't really got all the winter coat off the legs in places and here comes the next lot....... Boo, hiss!

My cob is moulting already too, and having to be in a lightweight at night. I'm hoping it'll warm up again, he needs new winter rugs this year as he's grown out of last year and i can't afford them just yet!!

Feeling sadly Autumnal here and noticed hunting cob's coat already thickening up with a nice layer of grease forming.

Suspect the clippers will be out sooner rather than later this season!

Yup another one here, also a WB.

He's in a rainsheet now. Coblet will be nekkid until he gets clipped or -10, whichever comes first (clipping hopefully!) Big ISH will probably need rugged in September.

Meh, here it comes again!

Glad it's just not me! You know what's coming next.. heavy, wet, muddy rugs; mucking out at the crack of dawn and dragging the horses in through torrential rain :( Why do we bother!

I thought it was just my boy! He's a welsh c x coloured cob, and is getting on the hairy side. His wee feathers are starting to grow in too- started charging my trimmers last night! Also wearing a fleece at night too.

My friends and I were commenting on this the other day. Seems strange since it's the best summer we've had in years- especially in Scotland! I'll be holding off on the rugs for a long time yet though: winter is natures diet :-p

Nothing to do with temperatures and all to do with day length. As soon as we go past the longest day, around about July 21st, their coats will start changing subtly. Seems unfair, but yes, winter is coming again!
Let's just hope it's not as wet or as depressing as last year; although it is the best diet ever.... Mucking out, trudging through mud, hefting haynets. It certainly shifts the pounds!

I read awhile back about professional showing people leave artificial lighting on in the stables to essentially 'trick' the horses coat into staying short.

my colored is molting a fair bit on his white patches but not on his bay patches! He is still naked at night but occasionally wears a fly sheet (if too hot he won't) or a rain sheet if it rains (hasn't actually worn it for a while!) By mid september he will probably start wearing a fleece at night.

Mine started in early July. I get about two weeks with no shedding between the end of losing his winter coat and the start of losing his summer coat. He's not even very hairy, he obviously just likes to take his time about it.

It's 21st of June when horses start changing their coats. It's all to do with the hours of daylight changing, it affects a receptor at the back of the horse's eye which causes chemical changes, which in turn makes them start shedding their summer coats and growing their winter woollies. Experiments have shown, weirdly, that it even affects blind horses.

I'm in the " moulting already" club too. My highland is moulting his summer coat now and is very greasy, so will back to being the hairy highland by September I fear. Hey ho .... Here comes winter.
