Mountain Horse long boot sizing

I’m half heartedly looking for some new long boots and have seen a good deal on some Mountain Horse Sovereigns. I’m usually a size 40 but typically these are available in a 39 or a 41.

I thought I heard that MH boots come up quite big so is it worth ordering the 39s and seeing if I can get away with it?

Also can anyone advise on how they fit on the leg? I usually need a short wide and these are one of the few boots I’ve found that have this option. On paper they should fit but am I going to try them on and find that they’re still way too long and tight on the calf anyway?

I’m sorry if this is completely unhelpful… I have the short stable boots (without protective toe) and the long Cumberland country boots. I know they’re a totally different shape and style to the Sovereign, but they do come up large for me and I size down to a 4. I’d give the 6/39 a try if it’s worth a punt?
 
Mountain horse long boots come up big in general and they are long I have had to use risers in all of mine in the beginning but they do drop, although I find with the closer fitting boots the foot is not as big so you may be OK with the bigger size, I have the Aurora long boots and and the venice they are small in comparison to the country boots, the high riders they used to make used to be huge.

I'm sure my aurora ones are are a narrow calf but regular length and they where a bit long and I don't have particularly short lower legs but did need heel lifts.

I'm sure they have a sizing chart with the leg measurements
 
Thanks all, I've decided to order them and give them a go. Worst case I'll just have to send them back. I thought based on some of your comments that although I said I usually take a size 40, I'm 6-6.5 in UK sizes and can definitely wear a size 6 in Ariat boots, which is also a 39. So hopefully they'll be okay and if I just have to wear a riser I'll be pleased as most boots are stupidly long on me!

Ha ha, now I've ordered I will share! It's Treehouse Sporting Colours and there's a discount of 30% with code JAN30 for MH, Le Mieux, Toggi, Shires and a couple of others, and then 15% off site wide with code JAN15. The boots were £299 so it still only brings them down to just over £200 but it's still quite a good deal for Mountain Horse.

Ooh lovely I love mountain horse boots they are the only ones I buy now for riding, I have a pair of the classic short boots and country boots so comfortable, the short ones were the only thing I could get on my foot when I broke my ankle
 
The first pair I bought myself were the juniors (I'm a size 6 and thought it was an incredible saving!) but they only do them in black. They were ridiculously tight when they first arrived, but I wore them around the house for 2-3 days and then they were perfect! 4 years later the zip handles snapped on one of them, so I've had to put a cable tie through it, but they've stretched so much they're almost baggy! They have however been my everyday boots, riding multiple horses. I splashed out on a newer pair of the brown croc ones last year, they took a lot longer to break in but super comfortable and smart now! They're staying as my competition/hunting boots!
 
I have an old pair of Mountain Horse long boots I still wear. I'm sure I've always bought a size down when buying Mountain Horse boots so they do come up large. I've got reasonably long legs and I wear risers in mine.
 
I’ve just ordered some- I’m normally a 5.5/6 but reviews were they come up big so ordered a 5 as all that was left in the same 🙈🤞🏼
 
The boots arrived today so I thought I'd provide an update for everybody who commented and was either thinking about ordering some themselves or did go ahead and place an order.

I'm usually a size 40 and ordered a 39 because they didn't have a 40. If I'm honest I think the 40 would have been the right fit so the advice to size down wouldn't apply here. I can get my foot in them and zip them up though. The foot is long and narrow so I think the length is what allows me to get my foot in them okay. They're intended for competition wear so I should be able to get away with wearing thin socks with them for most of the time.

Most importantly they fit and do up on the calf! Getting long boots to fit on my calves is a major achievement so I'm very pleased about this. They're ever so slightly long in the leg so I'll get some risers at least for now and possibly forever and that should make them okay.

I think they'll take a little bit of wearing in and the zips are stiff so might need a bit of oil. They are very nice to look at though and the leather is soft so I think they should be comfy once they're broken in.

So all in all if I was paying full price I would send them back and get the 40. But given that I got these with 30% off I'm going to stick with them and hope that once they give a bit they'll be okay.

I'm a bit of an odd size since I have large feet so I was really surprised that the 43R/R (regular calf/height) fit right out of the box. They were true to size and after a short break-in period, they did not drop too much. However I quickly found out that the footbed was too narrow for my feet. When I compared the Ariat and MH sole to sole, I realized that my feet were not lying to me! Unfortunately for this reason, I can't wear the MH anymore and need to sell them.

That's interesting and I do wonder if they'll end up being too narrow for me. I really like Ariats and my day to day boots are short Ariats that I wear with chaps. Unfortunately I just don't think any of the long Ariats are going to fit me judging by their size charts and so I decided to try the MH instead. I had a different pair of MH boots a while ago and they were good for me but had a wider foot bed than these ones and still weren't as comfy as Ariats generally are anyway.

I'll see how I go with these ones now and if they don't work for whatever reason then I might just end up wearing short boots and chaps for competitions too. I just think the longer boots look smarter and I want to stop being such a scruff all the time!
