No company will handle boots clothes or rugs with mud on them it is health and safety I afraid.
However your contract is with the retailer so I would contact them ASAP .

I'm afraid it's health and safety legislation that all return products HAVE to be returned clean and dry. They are not just being funny, all companies have this policy. However i would be cross at the shop you returned them to for not pointing this out when you returned them. Technically they have broken H&S by handling them too!!!

How bad were they? Covered or just a bit? Maybe you could ring them and beg? If you get the right person they may help you out.

I know of 2 people whose Mountain Horse boots have fallen apart at the foot just a few months after buying them - not good, they're a lot of money. As Goldenstar says the retailer should be helping you with this - I think I'd be tempted to go back to them and ask for a replacement or refund and stand firm if they try to fob you off.

my daughter has had 2 pairs of these boots over the last 4 yrs.She has worn them every day for mucking out and riding. They ,ve been brill in winter when its cold etc.Never had a problem with them. Her first pair she grew out of and we passed them onto a friend whose daughter now has them.Although shes a kid she has had the adult ones in a size 3 and then 4.We love them.Sorry you have had a bad experience .

the retailer does have the right to get their supplier to confirm whether or not the boots are actually faulty or whether they have been treated "badly". However they should not have returned them to MH dirty. They should know the H&S laws

The zip broke on my Rimfrost Rider boots. I had to send them back to Mountain Horse for repair ( at my cost) they repaired and returned them no problem (they were muddy) can u not pay to have them posted back?

A few years ago OH bought an expensive pair of work boots from Mountain Horse, they lasted all of 4 weeks. I cleaned them up the best I could which was actually quite well but MH sent them back saying they wouldn't look at them as they had been worn and had some mud in the stitching. Voted with our feet and will never buy any MH product again, on the other hand Ariat customer service is second to none, they have replaced chaps and boots by return of post

wow i wasnt aware i would have to clean there faulty goods! thanks for info on that, i wish i went with ariat now and will be doing so in the future the extra money they cost seems worth it when you think about how many people have problems with mountain horse. i have contacted trading standards now via email and will see what they have to say as im not happy i had to pay out to return them. 6 weeks these boots lasted im gutted and very angry with mountain horse i brushed the mud off but didnt wash them, half tempted to demand a refund now and go with ariat after all, thanks for the replys

I would be cross with the shop for not telling you they had to be clean. That is who I'd complain to and see if you can get them to pay for the return postage.

will pay postage back from mh if need be, but will then be even more annoyed with them as it would have cost me £30 to get them to sort out there fault! should have gone for ariat gutted i didnt now may still go for them any recomendations? i need to work in all weathers in them and ride several horses per day, also need to be warm and waterproof as have raynards (really cold hands and feet they go black!) many thanks

All goods must be really clean when you return them or you have just given the manufacturer a huge get out.
Brushing would just not be good enough .

Yep, I agree that the boots shouldn't have been returned dirty, personally I would have scrubbed them up but it does seem that these days you increasingly have to get into a fight if goods are faulty. You get some retailers denying all responsibilty and just hoping you'll go away but they take your money quickly enough in the first place ;)

I agree some retailers are a nightmare, but they should have a system in place. I worked in a saddler for several years and I know that ALL the suppliers opperate a system where you can return items for them to be tested to see if they are faulty. We used to take items in KNOWING they had been treated badly and not faulty (really obvious sometimes) and send them off at the shops expense anyway. Then the supplier deems them not faulty and then the shop has a leg to stand on. I always found the suppliers to be very fair.

well sounds like its my fault for not washing them will have to make sure i scrub the stitching too just encase. my boots looked like new except for small creases in the toes from wearing them, there wasnt a scratch on them so im not at all worried about them saying they have been used and abused as you can see clearly they are in vgc except for the right toe that lets water in, the left boot is great! i have other mountain horse boots but have never needed to experience the customer services (or not lol) will just have to wait for the email from mountain horse tomorrow and see what they say will let you all know x

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 sets out the obligations of retailers that sell goods to consumers.
The boots have to be 'fit for purpose' and if they are faulty then the retaillers should either arrange to have them repaired or give you a full refund. I would contact your local fair standards trading office and ask them to take the matter up on your behalf.
If you paid by credit card then you can take the mater up with the credit card company and ask for a charge back.

I had a pair of the short leather boots in black, one of them the sole came away from the heal inside, so took them back to retailer who sent them to Mountain horse, was ages but did get another pair in replacement which so far have been fine but haven't worn them much in the cold weather, so we'll see in the summer

I did clean them before returning them though, think thats an obvious thing to do sorry
