I have a friend doing work experience at the mounted police and she knows my horse is going up for sale. So they was saying they need bigger horses, and she recommended ben. They rang and they are coming to see him next week.

So basically what kind of money do they offer you for your horse? And what will I be expected to do when they come? I just think maybe they will want to see different things your usual buyer would expect?
 
Good grief, I have no idea! I've seen a little bit on television about how they are schooled, but nothing about what criteria they look for in the first place. It stands to reason that they'd want something with courage, stamina and a good history of soundness, though.

Good luck with him whatever happens.

I dont know much about the buying part of the mounted police but know a bit about what they do!!

It may be that it varies between forces, but I know that locally they have the horse for a set period of time, on trial. They put the horse through a rigorous testing process, during this trial, obviously testing how it would behave in a mock riot situation or noisy football match. I dont think they expect them to be perfect straight away, they just want to know that they have the right mentality to be trained to accept the job they do.

In terms of what they do when they initially come to see them I'm not sure. I wouldn't worry too much I would think they will just do a few basic tests. Possibly plastic bags and things like that and if they think they are the right type they request the trial.

Hope this is a bit helpful, I could probably find some further information for you, but wouldnt be able to get it for a few days.
 
I think they would want to have the horse on trial as they will need to put it through various testing processes. I know a friend who's horse ended up being a police horse but it does take a special horse to actually be able to cope. They, as far as I am aware will be prepared to pay fairly decent money for the horse as to find a horse suited to police work is not easy.
 
You need to be watching Mounted Branch, it's on Animal Planet. I think the next one is on 14 July.

Las week they showed them going to view a couple of horses. They just rode them in the school as far as I could see. No flapping bags or hooters or anything.

They were saying that they tend to go for heavier horses, for instance they had a shire cross. They like them between 7-10 years old and about 16.1-16.3hh.

Thanks guys good to know, they know his size and everything as friend has told them all about ben, they mentioned needing bigger horses so friend thought straight away of ben.

I hope he is good enough for them as he will be a fab police horse everyone had said prior to them ringing me he would be soo good.

I was actually just about to say the same thing.....I actually only just got chance to watch this on Tuesday this week and absolutely fell in love with it, unfortunately we don't have sky at home and I only got to watch it as I was babysitting for a friend of mine.

Defiantely worth a watch to see what they actually do with the horses they have etc!

And not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know if you can watch sky programmes online (either at the time they are on TV or afterwards) as I really want to keep watching this but can't get sky at home
