Following on from the warm up etiquette post what fold up, robust and quite tall mounting blocks / steps do you all carry?

I use the following - it is normally in the school but is light enough to put into the lorry

for hauling myself up onto my 17:3 horse although they do do a cheaper version

for smaller horses then

which is very similar to the Curver steps

I've got this and it's lasted for years but it might not be tall enough for really big horses. We've used it with a 16.3 ok.

Just a small foldable stepladder which is probably 2 foot high. Or I use the doorstep at the back of my 3.5t lorry, or in my previous 7.5 tonne just used the side of the ramp.

I just had a cheap folding kitchen step (but only getting on 15hh). It was £15 so wouldn’t be heartbroken if it disappeared while I was away from the lorry.

I have a rear step-bumper on my box, picked it up 2nd hand when the box was being built and the guys sprayed and fitted it, along with tow hitch. its enough height for me to get on from. Its a solid one that runs along the back, just wide enough to perch my bum on when having a cuppa outside too!
Took B a while to learn to stand alongside, but once cracked, its been fine.

I use the Curver steps and stand the steps on the ramp to give me extra height if needed.

Will look at curver. Needs to fold up due to storage and although ponies are little the microcob's saddle rolls if I'm not careful.

Baby cob is currently at the over excited in company stage so the bigger the block the quicker I can mount. I dragged my OH with me last weekend, but he was bored stuff hanging around so that won't be happening again!

I have got an IKEA two step stool. Not foldable but light and quite high (17hh horse vs 5 ft 1 rider).
I have the IKEA one though it seems to have gone up from the £13 I paid.

It's light enough to hold easily in one hand with a horse in the other and very solid. They do a higher 3 step foldable version if you need really high but I prefer ones that don't fold

I have steps but metal ones that are a bit taller than the Curver. Double sided step. Been in the lorry 9 years now, look like new.

Like this...

I'd be OK with metal - taller is a bit better because despite the microcob being 13h she has a habit of pretending the girth is tight right up until you have all your weight on one stirrup...

They're the ones I have too - I'm 5'6 but with short legs and could get on Monty and Charlie with them with no problems and they were 17hh. Getting on Wiggy at 16.1 with them is a doddle! They live in the trailer and fold up very nicely for storage in the nose. My friend has the curver ones. They're wider so don't fit in as well.

I have 4 of these around the yard and at least one comes with me to every competition!

I was going to post the same question! Good timing.. I used to use one of my water containers to get on my now retired horse but I don't think it will cut the mustard with the exracer, I would like something more sturdy. The metal ladder Red-1 posted looks perfect.

What do people do with the steps while they are riding at a show? I would be worried about them going missing.. Maybe chain them to the trailer chassis? I'm usually on my own, so no means of putting away once on.

I've always left them out and not had them go missing but then not sure how desirable a cheap wooden step from IKEA is. I wouldn't chain as the benefit of them being so light and manoeuvrable is I can plonk them into position one handed or move my horse round while I stand on top if needed.

I prefer wood to metal as I find it less slippery and doesn't make any noise when I use it which can be an issue with reactive tb.

I have this. It stays in the trailer folded up and lets me get on my 16.2. I just leave them out while I’m at a show. Never had an issue with them going walk about.

I've left mine out even when I've driven somewhere for a hack and been in a well used carpark and seen plenty of others next to trailers when I've been out hacking. I've never had a problem with them going missing. I suppose it's more likely to happen at a show where more people would have a use for them than out in the real world where the likelihood of someone unscrupulous person needing a step like that being in the right place at the right time is much lower.

I'd like to think there's an unspoken code of conduct around these things at shows. We all know that people need them so we'd never take someone else's. I've used an unsupervised step at a show in the past if there's not been anyone there to ask if it's ok but I wouldn't dream of moving it.

I was wondering whether they'd still be there if I got back from a hack. But none of the gates on my hacking routes give me confidence that they'd be ok to mount from - and some are so overgrown you can't stand a pony next to them anyway

I'd like to think so too, but I had a pair of back XC boots taken from a BE event years ago (I used to just leave everything out post XC when walking off, front boots landed under the trailer, so didn't get taken) as well as an expensive saddle pad that I left behind at a clinic that disappeared into thin air, so I'm a bit wary these days.
