mounting block for the trailer?

I normally just use the ramp with BH but Nitty is only a bub and doesn't want to stand next to it. Fair enough. What do people carry with them to stand on. I don't want to spend any money as she'll soon settle and I'll be able to clamber on the ramp/car again?
 
I have a grooming box which is also strong enough to stand on...comes in handy to do the last minute plait tidy etc but can also be used as a mounting block.

Could be worth investing in one?

I have one of these too - also useful for standing on to plait so not a total waste of money....

I'm sure you're sensible enough not to try to make do with a water bucket but just in case you were wondering about this option from experience I would suggest not :o
 
Borrow someone elses! My folding steps always getting used by folks in neighbouring trailers! Dont mind as they always ask! :)

That is the cheapest option but not always the most reliable!
 
Sorry for the slight digression - I've noticed that lots of people use steps these days. They give me the horrors. I can picture the horse moving sideways and getting a leg caught between the steps.

Does anyone else feel like this or am I being neurotic?
 
PMP that looks it could be a go-er. I'd love an excuse to trip to Ikea but it's over 70 miles away and I don't need anything else sadly. I would love some meatballs and loganberry juice :(


I could buy a nice step and carry I suppose. Hadn't really thought of that. I don't need anything to stand on to plait though. My horses are both quite little *smug* :D
 
So those of you who go out on there own, what do you do with your mounting block (whatever it may be) once you're on?

I am happy to invest in a mounting block to carry around with me but worry about it getting nicked if I'm on my own and have to leave it lying aorund
 
I've got a brilliant square wooden/plywood box stool which my dad made years ago to use in his workshop. It is just a cube shape with a cut out hole in the top to use as a handle. Totally sturdy, safe as no legs can get caught and best of all, it looks really crappy! It is covered in paint marks, is a bit stained from being left outside and has some surface damage from being used as a saw horse. I can happily leave it ouside my wagon when we go for hacks or at competitions without worrying that someone will nick it. It has been much admired by people who have borrowed it though as it is nice and tall and rock solid.
 
You could use a bike lock to fix it to the trailer or car to prevent it from being stolen, if the chain was long enough to let you position it to get on you could leave it chained up.

^^^^^I got a small box/step from Lidl, it is a good grooming kit box, lid is a step, I need something similar but bigger, my boy is a master of evasion, and I need to be higher, and portable.
 
We got what is called a "Tool step" from Clas Olsen. A rigid box like step (without a gap for any legs to get caught in) with a lift up lid and a small compartment in the top.

Very cheap, really light and practical. But yes - if you don't lock it up someone will have it away when you're not looking. Thankfully ours is for our daughter to mounter her show jumper so there is always a spare adult to pick it up and pop it back in the car!
 
I am having a mounting step attached to the trailer, made of wood coated in rubber it will simply fold away when not being used!

Me too, I've given mine a coat of wood preservative to prolong its life.

When I'm alone though I either ask the person in the box next door to chuck it in the trailer for me once I'm on, or I just use the front bumper of the landy instead.
 
Someone i know has one of these to use as a step/seat/storage http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80159519/

They turn it upside down whilst travelling and pack things into it to keep them together, and then when they arrive they use it as a step/seat. They aren't horsey but I thought it was a great idea as a portable mounting block, better than the wooden steps as there isn't a danger of a horse putting a leg through.
 
I have some little step ladders that I wedge in my trailer between my partition and water bucket but at shows I still struggle sometimes with putting my foot in the stirrup as I have a disc problem and I am unable to lift my foot into show jump length stirrups! Plus my horse wont stand for a second as he is very rude so I am thinking of putting a brick on top to give me that extra height.
