I need a mounting block! however they seem very expensive for what they are.......has anyone got a home-made one or use a sturdy non-horsey version such as a step?
I have looked at steps and been tempted but not sure how sturdy they actually are around the neds!
I have no walls/fences etc i could use either

lets see your *home made or non-horsey mounting blocks!"

I use something like this!
Just angle it alongside the horse (not with the top towards horse) and hop on!

One of these -http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6504225.htm

Much more stable than a standard mounting block and handy for other purposes.

a step ladder :o, a log, some air bricks, or one of those wheelie stool/steps you see in shops for stacking sheleves... i have a metal one of those which is quite good for getting on too :)

I bought this off ebay for 99p :) Two tyres, bolted together and a disc of marine ply bolted on top. You could use thicker tyres for bigger horses, the benefit is it rolls to a new location, and rubber doesn't scratch horses legs.
These days though, as a senior citizen, I have a small platform of boards fixed across the corner of the manege. Train the horse to stand nicely by it and you can step DOWN into the stirrup, even of a 16.3hh horse. I haven't got round to taking a photo yet, but I managed to find a small ladder which is designed to hook on and it is ideal to get me onto my platform. Creativity or what?

My OH made me one at of off cuts of decking we have big horses so he made 3 steps and a large top, it is very heavy but then it does not move I also dismount on it.

Brilliant idea!
I've been struggling to get on, even with the mounting block since I've got going after breaking my leg.
I have no spring through my right leg whatsoever!
I really need to 'step down' onto the horse at present, but am having the embarrassment of having to wait till someone is about to hold the off side stirrup as nothing is tall enough for me to clamber up. (currently a small stack of breezeblocks on a concrete base, so need more breeze blocks :o)

I currently use the yards wall as it's perfect height even to get on bareback but also have a normal 2 step ladder which cost £15 from B&Q which works fine, is sturdy enough etc and didn't cost a fortune.
What I need is a mounting block that I can take with me

I use an old chair! But I did have the ikea stool and it was great, it used to only be £8 though! If you get that one put some varnish on it as mine rotted quite quickly as it was left out.

I got the 3 step ones from robinsons when i got my boy - hes huge and isn't the easiest to get on! The are really high, and make mounting super easy.

Sorry they aren't make shift ones :o but wanted an excuse to post a cute pic :D

Pure genius, off to share this idea!

We have two at the yard, slightly different heights for all sizes! I think I might get one of those Ikea steps for the barn (so that you can mount 'indoors' in this weather :D )

It is interesting that when we were riding while on hols in France, the yard had no such thing! They were amazed when I asked for something to mount from and we searched all over for something suitable. In the end, horse stood in a ditch and I mounted from the ground!! :D:D I explained that it is usual over here and how it's better for their backs (and the saddle!) etc and when I returned the following year they had bought me a little step ladder :D

(lovely place and people, by the way!)
