,if i am out hacking etc or at shows,if mounting block unavailable then i hop up without, dosnt happen very often though bless him,lol!!17hh a long way up,i dont do bad but i am not the most agile anymore
Im quite fussy about tightening the girth too quick, when I mount mine I can easily get my hand through the girth, oh and guess what my saddles DO NOT move while I get on!
i can mount from the ground up to 15.2.....above that isnt physically possible due to my arthritis...
and also mount the above via a block..
it makes no difference whatsoever to their backs/saddles or anything else.......i really would be interested s to when this particular urban myth raised its ugly head TBH

we had a competition at PC Camp back in the dark ages where teams had to mount up using stirrups from the ground.....the saddles DIDN'T have girths....sorted the wheat from the chaff though....
Llewelyn.....I'm sorry but I feel very strongly that if you can't get on your horse from the ground then you shouldn't be leaving a yard to hack out as not being able to get on can be very dangerous. Also I never use a mounting block but since I always vault onto my horse his back is fine when the physio comes each 6 months for his all over check up.
If your well balanced and agile there is little pressure and it is for a very split second.
I mount from the ground regularly (I am short, my mare is 16hh). It has never affected her back nor her saddle but neither do I haul and climb up. If I can find a bank - so much the better (for me!
) I have also taught her manners and she stands still - even out hunting
Never tried it withouth a girth though! My mare has high withers so may be possible, other one is round with no withers - not a chance in hell thats going to happen on her!
I have always been taught to get on from a block/high ground where possible but also a strong believer, like others it appears, that you should be able to get on from the ground in case of unusual situations, middle of a field, accident meaning you cant be wandering around for a log etc. But then again it's a long time since I tried to get on from the ground and I've put on one hell of a lot of weight... don't know if i could do it atm!
I was 14 when I first encountered a mounting block, and had been riding quite a while by then...for riding school horses, I use a mounting block, and for the spooky pony, I often mount from the ground (he's not that tall, so not very far to spring). It's probably a bad habit...

RAOTFLMAO!!
Well, if you feel that strongly, I guess I ought to give up horses now
I don't mount from the ground - ever!! I am a very short legged, 5'3" and developed joint problems at 15, which was diagnosed as very debilitating arthritis just as I was about to turn 17, (I'm now 27). I hack *every* single time I ride - my school is about an hours hack away, I generally hack to shows, and last year, back when I was healthy, I would often hack for 3-5 hours on my own. I have *never* had problems mounting when out - perhaps I'm just lucky with my hacking, but there is always something to perch off, and I teach all my horses how to deal with gates. I have had regular rides varying from 14.2 - 17.3, but for quite some years now they are 16- 16.2, and it has never been a problem. I hardly think whether or not you can mount from the ground shows whether or not you are safe and in control enough to be riding out
I always get on Monty (16.2hh) off the ground, as long as the ground is level or i can stand on ground lower than him! Else i do struggle to get on (i always wear sticky bum jods and they aren't as stretchy as they could be!!) We are trying to sort out a mounting block of some sort but whether or not he will stand still next to it for long enough is another story!

No more hacking for me then ! I am 5ft, have duff knees and too much podge, and I cannot get on my mare from the ground. I physically cannot get my leg that high.
I am not well-balanced and I am not agile. I'd like to be, but I'm not.
Why is not being able to get back on dangerous? I have taken horses out in-hand, with no intention of ever getting on - is that dangerous as well?
I have an 18.1 hh horse who's not keen on getting up next to fences, gates, blocks etc. i can make him stand by the block but i'd rather not start my ride with him in a bad mood so i mount from the ground.
