mounting from the ground...?

I was thinking about this watching the pony club SJing at Burghley. A number of the kids came off, in that situation you are expected to get yourself back in the plate by yourself it would appear.

It's also part of the BHS Riding and Road Safety test - or was when my daughter did hers 8 years ago. You have to have taken your BHS R&RS in order to be able to take your PC B Test.

The number of people who don't know how to mount correctly without or with a mounting block staggers me. Most of them look as though they are trying to climb the side of a house, not spring lightly and athletically onto a horse so as to cause it as little disruption as possible.

Spider, may I just say at this point I am not looking forward to my 50th birthday, I'm tubby and I'm only 5'6. I don't make a habit of it but I can still get on my big 16.3 from either side without a mounting block. It is far more of an effort than it used to be though!

I used to do quite a lot of ghymkanas as a kid/early teen and that, combined with having a little ***** of a pony who would break into a canter as soon as you got your foot in the stirrup (like if you had to get off out hacking to do a difficult gate or whatever) made me very good at getting on from the ground. I was dead proud to have got onto a 17.2 from the ground recently!

Jemina_too I am 52 and never thought I would see the day when I would struggle to mount from the ground especially as my horse is only 15hh! I do know how to mount correctly and was able to mount from the ground easily until a couple of years ago. Now I can in an emergency but try to avoid it as it makes my hip hurt for days. I have done R+RS quite recently and we were allowed to use a low mounting block if we wished as they said it replicated standing on a bank or gate. Like a previous poster I just walk home if I can't find something to stand on!
