Mounting from the ground.

I can scrabble up in an emergency LOL
Rest of time I leave it to agile peeps and mount gracefully from a mounting block

I can mount her from either side though

Actually I think the custom (dating from when you had to avoid tripping over your sword) of always mounting on the LHS is totally flawed.

It stands to reason that tugging on a spine in only one direction is going to eventually cause problems !!

I mount from both sides - usually from the tractor wheel on the 'wrong' side, becuase the neddy likes to look out of the barn... still means I am not stuck with one side!!

I also don't use the stirrup I do mini vault from whatever I am stood from. Think that goes back to youngsters, where its not a great move to stick your foot in the stirrup

I was always told that it's bad for horses back and saddle to mount from the ground, not too mention me looking a complete eejit when I try! George is 16.3 so I always use a mounting block, however every once in a while I get on from the ground so I know I can in an emergency.

Thought it was just me who had to use mounting block, wall, whatever to get on! I have no spring at all, even in my late teens I couldn't get on a 12.2 by vaulting, maybe a lack of springiness is genetic!?

I also lack it!

climb onto the gate... honestly. your horse is trying to tell you he's not comfy with you getting on from the ground, imho. unless you have tons of spring, of course, in which case i apologise!

Its nothing to do with his back. Its an authority thing. This is the 1 place that he can challenge my authority and get away with it. If I mount off the ramp on my lorry, or the living steps, he does exactly the same.

Not usually, out hacking on major I used to a bit, or hunting when I have to get off to do a gate, Radder's I can't make it yet so usually use something near to me that is higher.

I mount from the ground, my boys or only 13.3, if i stand on a block they move about! Just wondering what do you guys do at shows where there is no block?

ok so im meant to be young but i could never get on from the ground!! always use the fence/gate/mounting block!!

and it makes be som envious when the jocks at work vault on! a friend also managed to do it son to song (16.2/3) the other day with song being up hill!!

Something to stand on or leg up unless I`m stuck, gone are the days when I had "spring". I`m 21 and its embarassing how stiff my hips can be!.

mounting from the ground..... lol,. gone are the days when legs were flexible! Struggle to get on a pony of 13.1 lol!
Daughter gets on from fround up to 16.2, but I have to use bench or anything with height...

Ditto!

always either get a leg up or use a mounting block/gate/anything to get on board! i have no spring and can get my foot in the stirrup and thats it.

plus it makes me feel bad when im pulling the saddle over to one side - plus it doesn't look too elegant either!

From a mounting block - although could do with OH building me a bigger one (I'm not as springy as I used to be!) Can get on from the ground but it's hardly elegant - away from home jump on from lorry ramp. Prefer not to mount from the ground if at all possible though there's no gates out our way and leading him out hacking would be more hairy than clambering back on - would have to find a suitable ditch to shove him in though

IT SURPRISES ME HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN,T MOUNT THIER HORSES FROM THE GROUND , A POINT I TEACH IN MY LESSONS FROM THE VERY BEGGINING , ALL MY RIDERS REGARDLESS OF SIZE OF HORSE CAN MOUNT THIERS QUICKLY AND EFFICENTLY , I CANT STAND SEEING HORSES PULLED SIDEWAYS , ITS POOR TECHNIQUE USUALLY AND EASILY RECTIFIED WITH A GOOD INSTRUCTOR, I ALSO POINT OUT THAT ITS FAR BETTER TO USE A MOUNTING BLOCK ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT IT SHOCKS ME THAT MANY PEOPLE CAN,T ACTUALLY MOUNT THIER OWN HORSE WITHOUT ONE .. SORRY FOR CAPITALS I,M NOT SHOUTING I PROMISE I JUST HAVE A KNACKERED KEYBOARD AND CANT GET THE RUDDY CAPS LOCK OFF

I lost my spring years ago.

Amy was no problem - she was only just 15hh - but that was my limit really.

I really envy people who can just spring up there.
