Can you do it?
I am currently rebacking a 4yr old and we do everything from both sides. He is currently standing at about 17.2hh and has a lot of filling out to do

I sat on him for the first time yesterday and walked him about today (he was absolutely fine) but I am struggling with the leg ups from the off side. I have a weak right leg anyway but to get up that high is not easy.
So I mounted my mare Hattie from the off side today and apart from nearly landing on her neck I just about managed (this was from a mounting block) but can get off that way easier.

So can you mount from the off side?

Used to be able to mount up to 16.2 either side from the ground. Now I can manage a 15.1 from either side. I guess that's what age does to you

I cant say I have ever tried to get on my 18hh on the wrong side, We did have to do it riding club pony with my old pony, and we had to do it, I was lucky though as I had been messing about in the week getting on and off on the wrong side so was like a pro

But at first was very confusing which hand goes where etc

Had to after one of mine bucked me off and wrecked my knee, but it was more of a scramble than a mount! It's something I should really practise I suppose, as it wasn't easy when I needed to do it.

Used to ride a cob who had a trick of swinging his quarters away if I ever had to get off and remount him out hacking. Mounting from the offside fooled him! Used to do it off a convenient wall or bank though.

Yes I can and do all the time. I constantly chop and change which side I mount and dismount from.

I think all you need to do is practice. Is there any way you can practice on a smaller pony? Once you get the muscle-memory to do it, you should be fine on a bigger horse.

I'm going to practise on my mare Hattie who is 15.3hh. As I know she will just stand there as a climb about. I could probably try on the 13.2hh pony but she is a bit funny about mounting anyway.

yeh!!! we used to hav competitions on the ponies when i had poppy, who could get on from the wrong side, then do an aaround the world, half scissors etc the fastest

Yes, from the floor too (he's only 15hh)

I got told off for mounting from the floor the other day

Surely if you are sprightly enough and agile then it shouldn't be a problem? I'm only little

years ago my instructor used to make me practise mounting and dismounting from the wrong side every lesson.

these days i just can't coordinate my arms and legs to get on!! i end up halfway up their neck or nearly throwing myself off the other side......
