We have a lovely gelding who will be three in july. He was cut last summer and has shown no signs whatsoever of being interested in the ladies!! However, he now has a field companion who is an old brood mare and has tried mounting her. I am not concerned that he is riggy, he is not coltish in any way, shape or form. But I guess Im just asking if this is normal? and will it 'wear off'. Its only their first day together and the mare is not upset about it at all and decided to come inot season. He is unshod.

Any comments greatfully recieved

Don't be too quick to blame him, it might be the tarty mare has egged him on (so to speak). I know my mare chased one gelding round the field backwards till he met her demands!!!

I thought this would be a post about getting on!
My horse was gelded quite late and had sired a couple of foals before I got him. He would still 'have a go' now and again for 2/3 seasons after being gelded, but it was very occasional and has worn off totally.

My gelding - now 19 - was cut as a 4yo (just before I bought him) He is usually brilliant being out with mares, however, if they are excessively 'tarty' to him, he will mount.
He now shares his field with my OH's mare who is extremely 'tarty' and will mount her usually once per season - although she does have a sign on her backside saying "get it here!"

He's been like this since I've owned him (15 yrs at Christmas) but he did cover 2 mares prior to gelding so could be a reason

My old TB mare had a reputation for getting the most well mannered gelding on his toes. She seduced a 13.3 pony to spend the afternoon sh*gging her - it was very highly strung and the next day won every class jumping as it stopped spooking. We used to leave them together the day before a show in the hope she would take the edge of him

Her greatest achievement was spending a whole afternoon whilst on a XC clinic to get Boris the Stallion - who had no interested in mares and was a dud to get a h*rd on.

In short, it may not be the little chap that is the problem, but the randy old tart. I would not be too bothered unless he is very large compared to her or bullying her.
