Hey this is gonna sound slightly silly.... My lass is just 4 and has always been fine for me to mount since I started riding her, but only from the floor! She isn't affraid of mounting block and Will stand next to it for hours, but if I try to mount from it then she is all over the place! It was fine, but now due to a medical problem Im not allowed to mount from the ground! Anyone got any tips other than having someone hold her while I get on as she dislikes people touching her!
ok.. i take it she will stand along side the block with noone stood on the block?
SOUNDS LIKE SHE IS GETTING ANCIOUS (SP?) (sorry about caps =o/)
I would stand a friend on the bloke and lead her past a few times, then stand her alongside for kisses and cuddle and build up from there to a foot in the stirrup.. leaning over
Lou x
Im quite lucky my lad stands there as good as gold while i get on (hes 17hh and too big to get on from the ground!....im not as supple as i used to be lol)
If i was you i would get her to stand by the block and reassure her, once shes calm put one foot on the block, again reassure her and wait until she calm. If everything is okay stand on the block while petting her, if shes not okay start from scratch again and keep doing it until she is.
I know it may take a while but repetition will work and will learn her not to fear you on the block.
maybe something happened in her past with a mounting block - perhaps someone was on it and maybe knocked it over and against her while standing on it?
You could try standing on it but not mounting her, just to get her used to you being on the block. Maybe get on it, stand there for a minute, get off it then try again until she settles & then get on her. Hopefully then she will start to be ok with you mounting her from a block.
All good ideas and I will try aspects of all of them! I rescued her when she was 8 months old, she had been badly beaten and was terribly underweight as well as terrified of humans. So basically I have been one of the only people near her, she has let other people come near once Im mounted etc but in general people dont handle her or anything else so I either need to find someone who has the patience to make friends with her to get on while I fuss her or, find a way to do it myself! Poor little love doesnt mean to be a pain Im sure!
If you've had her for 3 and a half years then you should have her happy to be handled by all and sundry. It should be your complete mission to ensure that se will allow other people to catch and handle her, then you might b able to have a helper with the mounting issue. What would happen if she got loose or if the vet were needed when you aren't there!!!

I'm inclined to agree with Siennamum......she really ought to be used to being handled by now full stop, and yes, that is regardless of her past.
I know its very silly, but Ive only ever kept her with idiots, I have got her to the stage where someone can turn her out and bring her in, hold her for the farrier even which is the worst thing, but then they do something stupid like smacking her if she goes abit dizzy, and its like the end of the world for her.I finish uni on weds, so I will defo start getting her used to some people and maybe try and get one of them on her.

Sounds like a good plan
Hopefully with some consistent handling she'll come round.
Good luck with her, and do let us know how you get on
My advise is just be patient. I bought Archie as a 4 year old and he was petrified of the mounting block and it just takes time.
He came from Ireland and all he was used to was people jumping on him from the ground (something wich I cant do!)
I had a mounting block built for me that was at the height of my stirrup and started off by putting the mounting block on the yard and wedging Arch between the block and the fence, so he couldnt turn round, he used to just spin.
It took me nearly two years to get him to stand still at the mounting block. It takes time, but it will come. He's still very young.
Do keep us posted.
