Am schooling 2 3 year olds at the mo at work, twice a week. they have been broken about 2-3 months now, but have a bit of trouble mounting them..here goes...
baby 1 - not at all scared, bit of a thug! will generally either swing quarters away from mounting block or just march straight off with trouble stopping him!! have had someone stand next to him, stick a hand on reins and hold whip on quarters and firm tap if he swings them! now however he stands when doing this so gotta learn to do it on own!! however first time now he will always swing bum out, so i now get of mounting block, tap his quarters and make him move over, then hold whip over him on block on quarters while mounting...this generally works...altho anyone got any new ideas????
baby 2 - opposite of baby 1, very scared, the more people near him the more worried, scared he gets!! however he will now stand by block while i mount with scoop of food, however, now need to theach him to go it alone!!! although the more you take him round to try again the more agitated he gets, and so worse. can mount from ground after standing by, jumping by etc!! any ideas on this boy welcome, as im running out other than stick with food for a while, gradually just put tiny/no food in scoop!

thank you!!

No great advice but I'd ditch the stick. I have a mare who takes the mickey and waits until you get to the final step and walks off. However, to overcome this I walk her to the block make her walk backwards, forwards and take her away from the blockbring her to the block if she goes to move push her backwards and repeat the exercise...basically avoiding the whole concept of mounting. Feed never features as this distracts her entirely. Eventually once we're all behaving ourselves we mount now it isn't a problem. I wonder if you change the position of the block whether this would help as well?

Any chance of moving mounting block? Woman at old yard had similar problem, she would mount her mare near the fence of the arena so she couldnt swing the bum, seemed to work for her

Having a bit of trouble with mounting my boy at the moment. Swings his quarters away , if you stop him doing that runs backwards. I've been making him go in the direction he moves until he's fed up.i.e.sideways or backwards. Today he kept trying to grab my stick so I picked up an old stick and put it in his mouth. he then stood good as gold! Weird pony.

could move a straw bale next to wall/fence, but didnt think that would really solve the problem, just avoid it!! altho maybe then he would get out of habbit, will give that one a go! thanks!!

Yeah got her mare out of the habit, meant she wasnt getting scared with a stick etc. Before long she was mounting her in the middle of the arena

I have the same problem and when i try with her next to a fence the minute i pick up contact she steps back, very frustrating, esp as she's not been doing this for long.
I tend to just make her stand next to the mounting block for a while until she is settled then get on takes ages though!

ok this may not be advisable for youngsters but the theory might help, i have a 13 yr old pony that knows every trick in the book and if i have to get off out hacking sometimes she wont let me get back on she spins round in circles and wont stand still.
i push her round and round in a circle if she starts dancing around and being silly, i keep her moving round me and wont let her stand still for about 30 seconds or so usually takes her that long to realise im getting cross, then i let her stop and she normally will stand properly then to let me get back on.
