Looking for advice please, a friend of mine has problems mounting her horse. He just backs up whenever she tries to stand to his side to mount. He also will not stand at a mounting block. Once she has her foot in the stirrup he is ok, the problem is getting to the point where she can do this. We have tried treats and people holding him but the more people that get involved the worse he gets. Any advice would be appreciated. :)

has your friend had the horse's saddle checked? Maybe he doesn't want a rider on him for a reason? i.e. saddle doesn't fit him very well.
My horse did this (it was more extreme though, he'd bugger off once you'd got one foot in the stirrup).

How old is the horse? is he / she green? how long ago was it backed? How long has it been doing this? when is the last time it was fine to mount?
Has the horse's back been checked? - for Kissing spines etc...

It would help if you could provide a bit more info...

If you have ruled out any pain issues, she could try mounting from the off side? I had problems after my youngster spooked whilst I was mounting at the left an i fell off before i got on, and for months wouldn't let me get on at that side but would stand good as gold for me to mount on the "wrong" side, I had to persevere with this for a while until he was over his fear, and is now perfect both sides.

He's 17hh, 18yrs and she has had him for about 18 months he is not green and is a dream with everything else, he has been like it since before she got him. His saddle is fine.

I had problems with my tb turning his bum away from the mounting block so I could not get on (particularly when excited/eager to go, especially at events etc). I use a stool if he is being difficult so that I can be stood on the stool and if he does not stand still nicely he is asked to keep walking around me. I found he very quickly learned that walking around in little circles was pretty dull. Now 99 times out of 100 if we walk up and use the stool to mount he will stand first time. He is also much better at the mounting block and we just go back to using the stool every now and then.
