Can any of you out there with a rounder horse get on from the ground without pulling your saddle round? It really offends me that I can't because I end up doing an undignified and frankly dangerous scramble up fences while trying to stand her near enough that I can leap aboard. Am I the only one or is there a knack? I can do it on a horse with a spine, just not mine.

I have the same problem, my horse is very round, mind you it doesn't help that i have a synthetic wintec saeddle i don't think... what saddle do you have? does a leather one still slip?

The best fit for mine turned out to be an imported cheap XXW from ebay, having tried every other option..it doesn't slip and is straight cut enough to allow for a chunky shoulder.

I do try to always mount from a block though, but that has more to do with my creaky hips and back than the saddle

my saddle slips too, i have no way of getting on w/o it slipping!! i have trie anti slip pads but they dont really help. i just always find something to stand on.

I spent a lot of time working in Canada as a wrangler and we get on horses differently out there, if you are tall enough you could try this. Instead of getting hold of the back of the saddle put your right hand on the pommel and your right elbow into the seat of the saddle this puts part of your body weight into the saddle before you get on. You then mount as normal. It also stops your saddle from twisting. Let me know if it works as I only use it on western saddles. KJH

MY saddle used to now I have a really good fitting gatehouse saddle, and now I can get on from the ground (allthough I usually use a mounting block due to pickles size issue!

I've got a N.E.W non slip numnah, wouldnt be without it!! its saved me on several occasions when i thought my saddle would slip, now its doesnt move at all, its as vital as my body protector IMO......

I just make sure the girth is really tight and jump as high as I can from an uphill vantage point if I can't find something to stand on - I am naff at mounting from the ground and usually end up pulling out hal the mane as well. I also seem to mount completely differently to everyone else cos its easier my way - I stand facing the head and put my foot in the stirrup and then put one hadn on the mane and one on the pomell and hoist myself up! I'm rather big chested and this way seems to stop me falling on my bum!

4 point straps seem to stop them slipping round.

exact same prob !!!!!! no matter how tight girth is !!! LOL

This has made me laugh !!! LOL

I normally end up tacking saddle of and having to put on again after gettin up from sitting in the floor !!!!! use fences, mounds of moss, even the added extra of 2 bricks on each other !!!! Or like I do now, don't get off if you plan to get on again without a mounting block !!!

Ooops, I realised from my original post that it sounds a bit like I always try climbing up fences. Most days I get on from the mounting block but I do feel that I ought to be able to get on from the ground out on hacks from a safety point of view. Daisy has a Thorogood selecta saddle, if she ever loses the weight i plan on investing in a new one for her so it sounds like saddle co might be the way to go.

I can't vault, I never did PC and the few times I tried at the RS where I worked I couldn't get onto a 13hh connie despite being 5ft 8. I have no chance on my 15.2

Jobo I have a limpet pad - is this the same thing?

KJH I can't see how that works? I'm trying to picture it but the way I'm picturing it my weight would come off my arm as soon as my weight went in the stirrup? I must be imaging it wrong.

Mine always used to swing around - the solution was a new saddle and a fitter, slimmer horse! Trying to keep a saddle on a rotund horse is like trying to strap it onto a football, it's gonna roll no matter what

I don't mount from the ground because: -

a) It isn't good for the horse's back
b) It isn't good for your saddle
c) I can't do it. He is 17hh and I am not flexible enough PMSL!!

I always mount holding the pommel of the saddle as it put's less pressure on the horses spine and the saddle is less likely to slip. I always teach kids how to mount this way especially if they have trouble mounting. It's also good if you're on a young horse or one that moves off because you're facing forwards rather than backwards. Never had a saddle slip this way and I used to mount 17hand racehorses in racing saddles!!!

Creaky hips dictate that I mount from a mounting block (our well in my case) if I'm out my horses are trained to stand wherever I put them, be it in a ditch or beside a tree stump. If I must I will mount from the ground, the english saddle slips on the new pony, but the western saddles never do and the girths on them are done up much more loosely.
I had lessons with a trainer when I came here and he rode without a girth! On a western saddle (showing off) mounted, walked, jogged, loped, changed rein the lot, the saddle never moved and he was a big bloke on a roundish 16h QH.
