mounting

my horse wont stand still when I try to mount ( using block )this is a new thing since moved yards at last yard she was out 24/7 and only rode in field for around 30 mins a time now I am working her more and it seems she knows that if I get on she has to work..what do you do to get horse to stand still? at moment I am scratching her (she loves that) and when I think she is relaxing on I go or not!..

My horse wouldn't satnd still so I got a pocket full of treats and gave him a mouth full whilst mounting, then a few more once on still standing. My problem was a shows but this solved it.. When we finish in the school now he now walks over to the steps I use to mount and stands next to them for me to dismount!!

God mine does this... i should really sort it but im a bit naughty i just get on quicker while ponio walks off!

You've got to be really firm with her and don't get on until she stands still. If she walks off just bring her back round and firmly tell her to stand. Just takes persistence but i'm sure others will have better ideas

You say she was out 24/7 at her previous yard -what is her routine now? I ask because my current horse is a bit 'backy' and will sometimes become tense and walk off immidiately after mounting, yet if I have to get off for any reason, the next time I get on he is much better. I have learned that by either giving him a quick lunge or doing a bit of in-hand work for 5 mins or so before I get on really helps. Perhaps if your mare is in more than usual her muscles are becoming a little tense/sore and her reaction is to walk away? Lunging etc first might be worth a shot?

I posted with a similar problem a few weeks back with my new horsie. Lots of good ideas - but treats worked the best! As has been said already, treat before mounting, treat for standing still. He has learned very quickly to be patient as it takes me an age to get my aged knee joints in position! Good luck.
