I've just found a lot of mouse droppings in my kitchen behind a dishwasher. I had found some in a cupboard so went investigating. Thing is there was also a large quantity of dry cat food down there. The only ting I can think of is that the mouse is coming from behind the unit and stealing the cat's food and taking it back to store it.

Has anyone heard of a mouse storing food like this?

Yes, I had a pot of gum balls that I left open in the lounge. They were disappearing rapidly and I thought my OH and daughter were nicking them. I moved the settee to hoover underneath one day and found loads of gum balls amongst lots of other food that was being horded there. It turned out we had a whole family living behind our dishwasher too and were coming out at night to feed. They had nicked loads of food that we hadn't even noticed and to think we had still been eating it knowing their little feet had been all over it. We don't leave food out anymore. Took ages to catch them all using humane traps. Dad was one angry mouse!

Yes the cat is seriously in the dog house - not only has he not dealt with this issue but it appears he's now feeding the little bu@@ers!!!! I've cleaned everywhere I can and will get it sorted. The cat was already on short rations but he's now going to be on short and supervised feed!!

Was just a bit freaked to find a massive store going on under the units - I didn't think mice did that.

I quite like wild mice (but not in my home obviously same as you) We have them in the stables and they never seem to grow in population, probably because they drown themselves in the water buckets, the horses squash them and there is no doubt we have foxes, weasels etc and birds of prey going about in and around too. Wild rats I am petrified of even though I have domestic rats, I run a mile if I see one!

Tell the cat to buck up his ideas

I think mice are like hamsters - they fetch loads of food and store it near their nest.

Certainly the ones that live in my hay barn do that... I find piles of edible things in corners

I named the mouse Archibald and we are on number 7 over a few years
Mouse poison is what I use, as OH idea of sitting with a spatula besides the place where he came our from every eveing did not work!!!!! but was amusing.
The gun dog just sat and looked at it,

When we first moved to this house we were inundated with mice in the Autumn. It was horrendous. They were in the wall cavities, in the space between the floors and in the lofts. At night I would lie in bed and hear what seemed to be herds of elephants running accross the celing and up and down the walls. I was petrified, I have a phobia about mice. It is really stupid because I'm perfectly happy to handle pet mice, it is just the wild variety that make me shiver. Man from Council put bait in the lofts and under floors and the noises, and the mice, disappeared within about a week. I felt guilty but was relieved. We have rats too, but they have never ventured inside the house. If they did I think I'd have to move out.
