mouthing bit, salivation - why better in a gag ?!

I usually ride my Sec D in a full cheek, french link snaffle. Its a fairly narrow mouthpiece, which I thought suited her better as she has a typical native fleshy tongue. She goes really well in it and I have no issues. However she never really salivates, she is relaxed though. For jumping and faster work Ive had to up the stakes lately as is feeling rather full of it , and so she hacks out in a dutch gag (french link) and running martingale. The mouthpiece on the gag is thicker but its the only one I could get. Im not a huge fan of these bits tbh but its what works best for her.

The thing is, Ive found she salivates and mouths the bit with the gag and comes back with a nice amount of foam on her lips. Why could this be the case :confused:
 
Its now thought that over salivation is caused by a bit that is perhaps too thick. So there's the possibility that she does find the gag mouthpiece a little too much in her mouth.

oooh really? Now Ive not heard that before but if thats the case it would make sense! Thanks
 
Just a theory: if she's got thick lips and tongue, the gag might be pressing the tongue more, making it more difficult for her to swallow. Couple that with the excitement of faster work and perhaps it explains the salivation.
 
Agree with above, she may be mouthing more because shes less comfortable? Or maybe she's salivating more purely because she's more excited, it doesn't mean she's happier in that bit :)

There are plenty of thinner mouthpieces out there, what exactly are you looking for? I have a free morning to go internet shopping if you want a hand?
