Mouthy horse

What would you think about a horse who threatens to 'put his teeth around' someone's elbow/upper arm when being led? Not nasty biting or lunging, just a very sneaky 'clop'. Always looks guilty when growled at and backs off. Usually happens when horse is being led and is behind as opposed to at leader's shoulder?

We once had a young horse we bought to break who would put his teeth round your arm, but not to bite, but more in a sort of strange suckling/support way...difficult to explain but you'd stand in the stable with his teeth gently round your arm and generate many a weird look from visitors!!

We never tried to 'cure' him cos he wasn't the nasty type and it never hurt, but if you wanted to, perhaps you could try putting something really unpleasant tasting on your arm (vicks vaporub or vinegar) so it hopefully puts him off. Otherwise perhaps if you made him walk alongside you on his bridle or with the rope through his mouth if on the head collar, perhaps he would get bored of his antics and give up once he realises that he can't do it...?? Just a few suggestions!!

Thanks. He's not nasty, but he is fairly green and still new to us so I feel he is testing his boundaries a little. He is pretty respectful on the whole, just these strange little 'clomps' near your arm in a very sneaky way - almost like he's playing. Anyway, it will have to stop so plenty of ground work methinks!
