I am currently in the process of breaking and bringing on a lovely young boy, 16.2hh ISH type.

All is going well, taken to the rider like a duck to water. Loves hacking out and gets very forward when we touch grass out hacking, trotting well on the roads. However...in the school it feels like we are doing a death march.

We have kept work in the school to a minimum, so I am sure he isn't ''bored'' of it already. We have worked on transitions (and it takes ALOT to get him up to a trot!). I have come to terms that he isn't going to be a speed merchant for schooling but other than transitions and variety (none of which have worked..) does anyone have any ideas for getting him moving?!

I don't want to use spurs as he is a baby and I want to get him responding to the leg, not harsh aids.

Get another horse in and follow it. Walk a lap together, then have a big trot, couple laps, change rein. Same in canter, lots of fuss then finish. Try that a few times until he gets in and wants to trot straight away.
