Hi

I moved my horse yards on Saturday 14th Dec, hes only been there 5 days at moment. He would eat hay in his previous yard but now gets a mixture of hay and haylage.

He is fed Dengie Hi Fi Molassess Free, NAF Garlic Granules, NAF Biotin and Codlivine all round supplement. He has been on this for past 6 months and seemed to love it. But now moved to new yard he wont eat it.

I have asked that he gets hay only (no haylage) to see if he will eat his feed.

I am going to make it up tonight in his old green bucket to see if he will eat it. He would normally bang the door watching me make his feeds up at previous yard as if to say hurry up mum lol. The staff at yard are currently making his feeds up.

Any ideas? x x

Is he eating plenty hay?

You could try adding in some unmollases sugar beet wo make the feed more palatable / appetizing.

Thanks guys :)

Yeah he is eating a mix of hay and haylage in the hay rack. Id say he is eating more hay as opposed to the haylage. I have asked that he is changed to hay only to see if he will eat his feed incase the haylage is filling him up too much. One of my fiends suggested adding some molassess into his feed to make it more yummy as currently on dengie hi fi molassess free. I dont know if he has went off one of his supplements. Its all trial and error. xx

You could try some apple cider vinegar? That seems to work for mine. He would previously favour his haylage over his feed, but splash of vinegar does the trick. Makes me want chips though!

I bet he's loving the haylage. If you're feeding hifi molasses free it seems crazy to then add molasses but molassed suparbeet is a pretty surefire way to get horses to eat their unpleasant medicine. One of my neighbours is using my sugarbeet to get her horse to eat antibiotics and he's licking the bowl clean. But this is a supplement so I suspect you want him on it longterm and molasses sugarbeet can turn some horses into absolute loonies.

Thanks guys :)

Yeah he has just turned 4 and was in light work so i didnt feel he needed the sugar for energy. Dengie came out and weighed him etc and suggested HiFi molassess free as has nutrtional content and doesnt have sugar. This, with his supplements, he seemed to enjoy eating it at previous yard as would bang on dorr when was making it up. Now we have moved yards, and wonder if the hay and hayage is of a better quality and he is just full up. He still eats the odd carrot or apple and is drinking his water. Just the feeds that seems to be an issue. I think tonight i will feed him the feed with no supplements to see it he eats it incase he has went off one of the supplements. I could even put a 1/4 of a carrot through it to give it some bite. Im just panicking incase it is stress related as moved yards on Saturday. x x x

Wee update..

So guys...

Last night i made up his feed and didnt put any supplements in it. It was just HiFi Molassess free and water, the way i usually make it. He still didnt eat it. I hung about the stable with him, left him in peace, added more water to it...but still he didnt eat it. He nibbled a tiny bit and smelt it but that was about it. He just moved over to his hay. Then i thought, i wonder if he is smelling something from their feed buckets (im full livery so there is sharing of buckets). I am going to go get his usual green one today from previous farm (kept stable on just incase lol) to see if that helps. I will make his feed up again tonight. He is eating his hay/halage (hes not too fussed on the haylage) and is drinking his water. I am clueless. Folk have suggested adding sugarbeet to his feeds but dont think he is in enough work yet to require more energy but want him to get the supplements....mmm. He eats his carrots and is still trying to mug me for scooby snacks haha.
