Movement preferences is it personal?

looking at the vidoes of the foals selected for the star sale I really am starting to wonder if what i "like" is what is correct?

My personal prefernce is good hock action, pushing forwards, that push provides a moment of supension allowing the foreleg to extend and stretch out in from... as shown in the Special D x Samber video and also this one......

However I have noticed that there seems to be a difference in this foal, the hock action elevation is good but I feel the foreleg is almost being brough "back" before it has a chance to really extend forwards.

The reason I am really starting to notice this is that through taking pictures some horses are very easy to photgraph and capture the "extension in the forelg whilst others are virtauly impossible and when they do extend they are almost on the land...

any comments?

I agree with you, the second foal doesn't really seem to extend at all, bit does have big movemnt. Think it must be personal preference and I guess some types of movement are better for different disciplines? Although I agree it does use it's hindlegs I dunno, it just seems to push further back behind than the other foal and that is something I personally dont like. Hope that makes sense.

I think the 2nd foal is a bit heavy for my liking anyway - so maybe I'm biased, but it still has big powerful movemnent I'd say not quite as expressive as the 1st foal.

i actually prefer the movement of the second foal to the first.

The second has a lovely big loose action. The first foal dosent seem to cover so much ground as the second, however it does have a lovely hock action - and it also 'points' its forelegs more.

But i wouldnt say no to either of them!!

I love the movement of the first foal. It has a wonderful loose action both behind and in front.

The second foal looks tighter through it's shoulder, and is not as 'expressive' in my eyes.

ones a Show Jumper and one is a dressage foal!

No seriously you can tell the difference between the trot the first foal is supple through the back but the trot is not so elovated and although extends does not have the extension of most modern dressage foals. Bet it has a fab canter though!

The second foal in my opinion you can tell is dressage bred although in comparison to some very pretty but did not blow me away with movement (but only judging on very small bit of footage)

Hmm difficult one, both move well but i would say the 2nd has more elevation which is harder to train but the extension would come later with correct training. I like the looseness of the first one and she is better in front but for Dressage the cadence, power it has behind and the ability to sit the 2nd would be my choice

I prefer the the hock action of the first and the look of the second. The first does not do much for me, although it is active behind it is actually going downhill in its motion IMO, although it looks croup high. The second I like the expression it has, more "look at me" and it looks like it covers the ground more.

Saying that on the video alone neither would appeal to me...........LOL

Have a filly at home that is better than the two of them put together...........

quoting myself here as too late to edit, what i mean here

"2nd has more elevation which is harder to train" is harder to teach the horse to be elevated not harder to train a horse that is naturally elevated incase someone read it that way lol

stunning, i also like 61, 65 and 85. Was hoping to go but couldn't get time off from work. last time we went the foals I liked went for mega bucks.

The movement of the first foal is more my bag, the second foal may have a little more 'presence but it goes wide behind and does not have 'gears', the first foal has good hock action and good lift in the shoulders and knees and has more scope in his movement i also prefer his back and i like the neck connection into the shoulder better than the second.
I like to see a good canter and clear walk and in the trot the activity of the joints in a clear matched diagonal pair is what i look for not the most extravagant pace. training and time and strength should develope the trot.
I have riden a few youngsters in Germany this year and the all had the huge trot, very elivated and passage like but no ability to change it, it went up but lacked flow and difference and this is so important. I like to see a good transmission of energy freely through the body .
Like has been said this is just a personal preference, i just know what i like to train and why it suits me and the level to which i ride.

Interesting that mum doesn't seem to have the same quality movement.

I think that foals move better than perhaps any other age group..... Excepting the odd occassion eg. when stabled horses are turned out or stallions are showing off.....

Nothing seems to ping quite like a foal...

I do agree with you and when we were stallion hunting in Germany last year with the Oldenburg society people they said just that, the big sellers were always the biggest movers but the trainers always went for something less extravagant... this was ridden horses, like Navelgem says foals do tend to be the most expresive and this movement somehow lessens with age. Interesting thread, can we have some more like this please

I much prefer the movement of the first foal! It's front action is up and forward with a nice loose action. The second foal looks to have more knee (up) but doesnt have the loose forward and out action.
