Moving from DIY to full livery

Done both... hated full with a passion. Yard I went to was made me feel isolated mostly because you become another livery. Moved onto DIY eventually and I love it. Full makes me feel constantly insecure about your horse (“who’s handling my precious pony?” “What if he colics and no one realises?” “What if the grooms are rough?”) but that’s just me. I’m happier with full control, but full is great when you need an extra set of hands.

I think on full/part livery, where the owner is still going up daily, there is far more chance of colic being noticed. My horse is rug changed, turned out, brought in, feet picked out, flicked off if needed to rug by yard. They notice changes in eating / bed / droppings etc. I am also down daily to groom and exercise before or after work.

When I was working full time and DIY my horses had far longer between being eyeballed, were at if anything more risk of something going undetected for longer. Just because I would be doing them very early before work and later after work, and not there in between.

@bouncing_ball I agree if it’s the same people dealing with the horse each day, but some yards dozens of grooms who deal with different horses each day, so things could possibly go unnoticed. I’m also a bit of a worrier, you always feel better when your the one doing everything.
