My OH and I have recently found out we'll be moving to the Moray (Forres/Elgin/Lossiemouth) area of Scotland in July this year.
While I'm excited, I'm also a bit overwhelmed with where to begin with relocating a horse such a long distance away and finding a good livery yard when it is an 11+ hour drive away! Luckily I have a good amount of time to plan - should I start looking at yards now? From what I can see from a quick google search there seems to be a couple yards I might be interested in, but I don't know if it would be too soon to reach out at this point? Any advice from anyone who knows the area or how to navigate a big move like this would be so helpful!

Look at Rashcrook for Livery. Well established.

Plenty of Horsey stuff going on in that area, Moray RC are active. Lots of venues running different shows.

I would have said the earlier the better to reach out to livery yards especially if places are full. Lovely part of the world though. Wish I could ride around Roseisle.

Wow how exciting!! Are you buying in Scotland? The buying and selling process up there is SO much better and easier than England so you are lucky in that respect! I would reach out to yards asap as it could be a while till you’re able to physically move…I’m not sure how many yards there are that way but I’d say find a yard or selection of yards first then the house 😂 having relocated myself we didn’t really have horses in mind at the time so much and just went for the house…only to find zero yard options nearby when we needed one. Of course work etc may dictate but being a horse person I’d say look for the yard first 😂

Are you going to get a transporter? I definitely would it takes away some of the hassle unless you want to load up your lorry!

Rashcrook works for Elgin but would be awkward for Forres, lossie has a saddle club and there’s a few diy grazing rentals along the coastal strip there. Forres has Mundole, there’s one at snap of moy on west of Forres, there’s Ellands, my recommendation but likely to be full, at Brodie.
There’s another to the east of Elgin but I can’t recall name atm! There’s also a few places which will rent a share of a private yard. There’s a fb page and it’s worth using Riding Club for help/contacts.
There’s no indoor school (rashcrook has a small one for liveries) nearby.
Happy to pass my thirty plus years of living here!
I always use Eric gillie for moving horses

We're moving into military housing so don't have a lot of choice as to where we'll end up but it will most likely be Elgin! I've seen three yards that are within a good distance so will reach out to them asap! And yes definitely going to look into Eric Gillies as I have used them in the past and they were brilliant :)

Not sure where you are but there’s a lovely guy who runs a one man band horse transporting company called Hugh Benham. He was going to move my boy from Hampshire to Shropshire. He’s based in the Cotswolds. Think his company is on Facebook called The Horse Transporter.

I follow someone on FB who has just moved from Scotland to Devon. They chose a transporter in the end for convenience, even though they have their own lorry. One less thing to worry about.
