I know... Two horses imported from other countries

One was an old QH mare (adapted well to our rain!), the other a Lipi who was bought over as a stallion and gelded upon arrival. Both settled in fine

mum is emigrating to Kansas and wanted to take her mare. cheapest price she could find was £5000

Tia has done it very successfully with a pony who wasn't all that well previously. She'll tell you all you need to know.

A girl in our Pony Club took a fairly elderly pony to New Zealand (sure £8K was mentioned

) Haven't heard how she is though.

Yes Zizz has the pricing figure almost right. It cost me over $6,000 to import my pony to Canada. I decided on shipping in in through the States rather than directly to Canada because there is no pre-export quarantine if you go in through the States. If you ship directly to Canada then your horse has to do 30 days quarantine in England and then 30 days quarantine in Canada.

If you have a gelding then they only need to do 3 or 4 days quarantine in the US, but if you have a mare like we did, then they have to remain in quarantine for minimum of 15 days.

Best of luck if you decide to go for it, but think long and hard about whether this is the right thing to do. It would only have cost me a few hundred more to bring my other 2 horses with me however I was concerned about how they would fare with the long flight, so in the end I decided it was better for them to be found kind and caring homes in the UK.

I could never have left our little Cloud and I knew fine well she would cope with the flight perfectly, which she did. I am so glad we did bring her.

I too have been thinking long and hard about this. I moved to the states almost 2 years ago and am still undecided as to whether I want to bring Harvey here or not.

I got a quote from IRT which came out at about $4500. I just don't know if I could do it to him. He is fairly laid back, but at this point I have not seen him for over a year, he is 13 now and very settled with a great girl who is hunting and competing him and generally having great fun with him. The selfish part of me says "bring him here, I want him here", but the other part is saying that he is settled and it would just be upsetting to him to drag him away from everything he knows.

It is very difficult to know what is the best thing to do.

The 2 horses I left behind; I bred one and owned him for all 12 years of his life, the other I absolutely adored but had only owned him for 2 years. I knew I would find a fantastic home for the latter one, but I wasn't sure whether I would find anyone suitable for my homebred who had only been ridden by me.

The lady who bought the homebred phoned about him the very same day that I placed his ad in the tack shop. I wanted him to go on a 1 months trial which after 2 weeks I just knew she was absolutely perfect for him.....lovely lovely girl.

The lady who bought the other one, my XC horse, owned 200 acres and wanted him for Le Trec which I knew he would adore! She trialed him at my home for 6 weeks and once again I knew she would be perfect for him.

My 3rd horse, who was a bit of a crazy old bird, thankfully died at her retirement home so I didn't have to make that decision.

The first horse was an Anglo-arab who was pretty spirited and I worried about how he would have mentally dealt with the flight. The XC had a blemish and I felt it may be detrimental to him.

Cloud, the one we brought, has been with us since she was 4 years old. She had been seriously abused when I bought her almost 10 years ago so I really wasn't sure whether I could sell her or not. I did advertise her and had some truly lovely people come to look at her. All of them adored her, how could you not! So I did put Cloud on trial for a month aswell, however after 2 weeks I was very concerned about her so I cancelled the trial and brought her home. Later in that year whilst we were in Canada at our farm, Cloud almost died from laminitis and we had to fly home to have her put to sleep. Long story made short, she survived and so the decision was made that she would never leave our ownership for the rest of her life and therefore she would accompany us to Canada.

I don't ever regret any of the decisions I made as I know they were all the right ones and for the right reasons, but I really can understand your emotional dilemma. Personally if I was in your situation I would leave Harvey where he is but that, of course, is your decision to make.

Oh and for your interest, I used Peden Bloodstock to ship Cloud over here. They were absolutely fantastic from beginning to end! I cannot rate them highly enough.
