My spouse and I are about to close on a 5.2 acre property. It has a pond and a 60ftx40ft pole barn structure on it. No fence, no stables etc. We need to run the water line to the barn as well, although it does have electric.

We plan to bring my horse home as soon as it is safe and feasible to do so. I'll (hopefully) add a link that has a rough diagram of what we are planning for the layout of the property. I still need to work out how the inside of the barn will be done. Another answer I don't have yet is what to do with manure in regards to disposal/management.

What things did you wish you knew before you brought your horses home? How can I better be prepared for what lies ahead?

Thanks!

It's so exciting bringing them home and having control over their management. The drylot infront of the barn looks like a good addition is that already there ? If not make sure you look into work surface for the area will work best for you.

With regards fencing the perimeter go for the best and most secure you can afford. We have tornado horse fencing which also stops dogs coming in as we have a foot path running along the boundary and also have hedging. Hedging is great for giving some shelter from the elements and depending on what hedge you grow they love eating it !

I don't have stabling in a barn so no ideas on that.

Before you start making too many plans do you know what the status of the land and barn is, does it have planning for equestrian use ? If not then before you start adding stables you will need to get change of use of it is currently agricultural otherwise you could be storing up big problems for the future.

Good luck and enjoy !

None of it is already in place, it's just the barn and the land. We will be researching footing etc for the drylot as that will be the first turnout completed, since the rest of the grass will need time to be managed/improved before it is used.

Luckily, the land is already zoned such that horses on property are no issue.

Interested in hedging...we don't see that much in the US, is there much management, trimming etc that must happen?
