Parents have house in Spain and I'm seriously thinking of moving out there I have 3 horses my two young ones would adapt fine but I have a 20yr old ish that I'm not so sure of I would never leave her behind... How well do they adapt? X

A friend moved her mare to Dubai from the UK, she clipped her out fully before the journey and she travelled fine on the plane etc. She settled in no problem and its really hot there. If your 20 yr old is fit and well and you break up the journey etc don't see they shouldn't adapt as long as she has shelter from sun etc. Maybe move over in cooler months to allow time to settle before it gets too hot.

Why shouldnt a horse adapt to warm weather, we sometimes have hot summers, as long as there is plenty of water available any animal will thrive, what a wonderful way to live rather than cold and wet, go for it.

I brought a 20 yr old from Ireland to Italy and she has coped fine. Didn't need clipping but has a fine coat anyway. As above make sure they have shelter and plenty of water and they will be fine :)

I moved mine to south of France, and I do clip my cob in summer and they stand in cool barn when it's 40 degrees out, but otherwise cope ok. There are some new flying beasties you'll have to adapt to!!

I was going to move my beastie from UK to Malta but didn't due to cost - Im glad i DIDNT!

Its not so much about them getting used to the weather - imo its also the difference in upkeep :(

I couldn't have brought my horse to Malta and taken him from a 2 acre field to a 15 ft x 15 ft paddock which is how they keep them here!

Spain to my knowledge are the same although they use sand paddocks but as is everything this is not the case for everyone of course :)

I would look and research the yards/places you would be keeping him and how adapt your care over there tbh :)

We have horses come from UK, France, Sweden, Italy, Spain & Germany....all cope with weather fine :D

We had 40 degrees plus in the summer - clipped them - all good :)

Most of them go crazy with change in enviroment/keeping....weaving/cribbing/loss of condition & weight/strong/bargy/bolting...list goes on and on :(

We also have a lot of random colics - although not due to sand but due to restrcited movement, salt levels in water....bad hay...they feed straw here...take your pick!

Thanks for the awesome info CobsMum - always good to have the knowledge just incase! :)

I would try to navigate your area in Spain and find local yards/connections to get their info on how you would need to adapt your horse to help it settle in :)

If a horse is going to suffer due to a hot climate, it will get the same symptoms here in the UK in summer, even i sometimes find it hot here in summer and i am from Africa.

You just have to use common sense when the heat reaches very high levels and keep them cool, under a shady tree where a breeze blows through is very cooling to any animal and yes if you dont have natural shelter in your field, bring them in between 11 and 3pm.
