Hi all!
Has anyone travelled from the UK to the EU or vise versa with your horse for training or a competition recently? If so, can you please share your experience in regards to new requirements to documentation and customs checks?
I am planning on bringing my horse with me from Spain to the UK this summer for 3 months and then going back to Spain but I have got completely lost with new regulations and customs regulations.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Natasha, i'd contact the BEF and failing that, contact HMRC's customs helpline.

I *think* you might be able to use temporary admission to avoid being hit with customs charges - but of course, there will additionally be health requirements as well as the customs ones... https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-to-import-goods-temporarily-to-the-uk-or-eu

Hi Rachel, thank you for your answer and advise, I will do so.
So far I have understood that on the return trip to EU the horse needs to be tested for equine anemia and an Export Health Certificate should be obtained.
For the outbound trip to the UK it is still not clear what is needed.

In regards to customs it seems that I can obtain an ATA carnet in Spain and with it I won't have to pay import and export charges as the horse is being relocated only temporary.

It seems after Brexit moving a horse has become a real issue though =(((

The carnet will cover you for the customs/duty side of it. A 12 month one has multiple vouchers for repeated border crossings.
At present you can not make papers directly from Spain to U.K., so people are making traces to France or Belgium and then EU export papers to the U.K. Depending on what passport your horse has depends on if blood test is required for EU export.
Whoever you use as an agent/transporter should be able to talk you through this.

Speak to the big transporters, the likes of Parkers etc. They are doing weekly trips and have all the facts and figures to hand.
Yes, I have been in contact with them already but they know well and do all the paper work only for the return trip (UK - EU), for the the outbound trip( EU - UK) I will have to do all the paperwork myself unfortunately.

The transporters unfortunately do not do any paper work for the outbound trip apart from IPAFFS entry so I am jumping through hoops now trying to get a clear answer from the Spanish authorities if they want me to do anything as well before moving the horse and yes it seems like no one here in Spain knows yet what needs too be done.
Yesterday I have found this recent document:
http://apha.defra.gov.uk/documents/bip/iin/eq-2b.pdf
and it is very helpful and clear about what the British side wants and according to it my local vet can sign a vet certificate however I am still looking into what the Spanish side wants.
My horse is a KWPN with a Dutch KWPN passport and he is a gelding.
