Hello all, I’ll try keep this short however any advice at all would be great.

About to buy my first house with my partner. I’ve currently got a 25 year old horse to consider also. I can’t really afford more than the diy I pay now especially with a new mortgage. I already work a good 45 mins from home, this may be more or less once moved. I also work long hours. Any ideas on how people have done this in the past or what’s best for the horse.

He is happy where he is, but if I move away (currently he is on diy livery in the village where I live) then I can’t drive the 30 miles to diy him, I can’t afford full livery, and I’m struggling to find any diy around the Northampton area which is where I’m looking at going.

I seem very stuck :(

There is a yard close to Moulton College. After that I would be looking at Church Farm (Church Brampton). Also a yard Between the two which does DIY.

Church Farm has no spaces, the other one near there is something insane like £60 a week DIY and all horses must eat her food and be fed together. Boughton Mill needs to be avoided at all costs and doesnt do DIY. I'm at a yard in Overstone and desperately looking to get off there, they are advertising so be careful, happy to give you details via PM. Jane Butts in sywell is full. John Hope is in Grendon. I dont think he has spaces either but I cant get hold of him to find out for certain

Bramble Barn just opened at Bozeat but its not particularly cheap and too far away for me. Low Farm looks good but they have next to no winter turnout.

I was at a yard in Gayton, £25 a week, working farm but I like it there. All year turnout, 24/7 pretty much all year round. I only left as there was no facilities and the walk to the field was too much for me as I'm disabled with mobility issues, wouldnt be an issue for a normal person. Theres a really bad yard and a really good yard in Kislinbury, the good one doesnt get spaces often.

Nobottle Grange is lovely as is Nobottle Stud. The stud bring in either in the day or overnight all year round, and winter turnout can be a bit limited, but I would recommend it to anyone. I was really sad to leave but I couldnt keep driving my pony on that road. Ridden horses have access to off road hacking though. £35 a week inc ad lib haylage. No idea if they have spaces currently though.

Theres more but if I list them all I will be hear all night! There isnt anywhere else with spaces at the minute, believe me, I've looked! I am at the point where I think I am going to have to sell my little mare as the stress of it is making me ill. I hope you have better luck than me and happy to help in anyway I can!

Is it worth contacting the local riding club or pony club to ask if they know anyone? I moved to an area once and hated the big yard I was at so asked the secretary of a local show we went to and she gave me a few names - ended up at a private individuals house. Also local equine shops usually have the smaller ads.

I’ve attached a map of where abouts I’m looking if you know anywhere there?! Also saw a stables in Upton and looked there at a house too but was all private

I'm just down the road in Overstone, I cant recommend it though. I dont know if it will settle down or not but its full of lunatics presently and if I could I would be gone! I do know of another space on a different yard owned by the same person though actually. It will be close to you as well. PM me and I'll give you the details.

There is grass livery only in Upton but not sure if they have space or not, I've got the number somewhere. If you are looking over that way theres a few, Tunnel Hill, but winter turnout can be limited which might not be ideal for an older pony. Stoneworks is bBlisworth as well but they are currently full and it would be a horrible drive from Moulton way. Hockerhill has spaces, Hockerhill always has spaces though, make of that what you will.

What are the local shops? And I’ll have a look!

Have you looked at welland valley feeds small ads, the yards might be bit too north for you. Otherwise tower farm in earls Barton might have ads, the one in Rugby does. There’s a Northants livery page on fb that might be worth joining

Blue Barn in Hardingstone is the local feed shop along with Jane Butts in Sywell. Jane Butts has nothing currently advertised but worth asking the staff as they might know of something. There was nothing in Blue Barn yesterday but it can change on a day by day basis. Welland Valley dont seem to keep the ads updated. i responded to one that was posted months and months ago.

I looked at a lovely private DIY yard the other day, no good to me, but if you dont need a school the hacking is really good, the place is immaculate and the other liveries seemed lovely. Again, I've got details if you want them.

There are 3 or 4 local FB pages. Just type livery Northampton and they will come up. You will see the same 3 or 4 people advertising over and over. Theres a reason for that!

Would you consider retirement livery? (Based purely on horses age, no idea if still in work, apologies if I've missed it.)
