Just thought I'd ask for a bit of advice.

On Saturday I'm moving my horse from one stable to another brand new stable in a totally seperate part of the yard. I never wanted to move but YO wants to turn our stable block into accommodation for visitors, so I didn't have a lot of choice.

Anyway, James has been in his old stable for 14years and is very much a creature of habit. I'm planning on moving most of his bedding to the new box so it smells familiar but apart from that I can't think of anything else to ease the situation for him. The new stable is in an area with 4 horses already there so there will be more people than he's used to as it used to be just my two in the other stables.

So after a lot of waffling......any advice or ideas people?

Thanks

H

Horses tend not to mind this as much as we think their going to. I'm sure that putting his bedding in there will undoubtedly help. Also ensure that he is not the only horse in when you first bring him in from the field.

Taking in his old bedding is good, failing that put a bit of his poo into the bedding. AmyMay is right, we seem to worry about these things far more that the horses do. He'll soon settle down, keep the rest of his routine the same & he'll soon adapt to his new environment....you see it'll all go well

Thanks Amymay - He does every thing with his field mates (coming in/going out etc) and they normally split up to go to bed. So the difference is that he'll be following them into their yard and going to bed!

I think I'm probably just fussing way to much as he's an old boy now and I hate to see him upset!

No you're just being a concerned mother! And quite right too.

I'd personally say just move him - I think worrying about these things sometimes tranfers to the horse and makes them apprehensive - or maybe that's just my boy?

Your probably right! He's a very chilled chap and normally is cool as long as I'm around, which I will be, However, if the slightest thing is going to upset him and spark him off he'll be an absolute git!!!

I think I'm just trying to cover all bases so that this doesn't happen

If you keep your routine to the same as it is now it wil help him. Think poitive about it and it will rub off on him. Hope it goes well for you - I am moving this weekend too! My mare is used to moving with me - she doesn't seem to mind as long as she gets fed!

Yeah you'll be ok - always surprises me how much of their 'spark off' moments are down to us - moved my boy to a different yard on Friday and I was so nervous - affected him too! When I saw that he was standing chilled in his stable on Sunday I also chilled.......

Good luck - sure he'll be fine xx
