Does any1 else think that it is crazy to move the 6yr old finals to scope, away from HOYS?? I think that the change of format is a great idea but its such a shame to move the final. If they had to remove 1 class I think the newcomers would have been better. what do you guys think??

No I think the Newcomers should stay at HOYS. You have to think of crowd appeal and Newcomers final is a far better class to watch.

Nope....I don't think it's a bad thing....as they're going to replace it with a good amateur class instead ! As i don't have a 6yo, or a 7yo, or a horse that is ever likely to make the Newcomers or Foxhunter Final, then an Amateur class sounds great to me.....so long as they stick to only allowing 'true' amateurs to compete in it lol!

I agree that an amateur final is a good idea but I disagree that the newcomers is better to watch. The newcomers is normally at about 11am, before the proper performance starts and there are very few spectators. Horses range from 5 upwards and its usually a gallop round a track that isnt big enough for a prize that isnt that much considering the cost to go there.
The 6yr olds is mid afternoon over a proper track which is similar to the small international classes and is more about jumping than galloping all with horses of the same age group. I think its much better to see future international horses come through in that class and as Geoff said it gives them a taste of the atmosphere, tracks etc that they may well have to jump in a year or 2s time at proper international shows.
In short watching the 6yr olds I think you see (generally) a better class of horses than the newcomers.

---The change of format is instead of jumping double clears at 9/10 qualifiers across the country over the summer, gaining 10 points per double clear and not knowing how many double clears you will need until the 2 weeks before HOYS begins. Its now gonna be 4 qualifiers over 3 rounds and 1 triple clear qualifying you for the final, thus not having to travel up and down the country with young horses constantly chasing an unknown goal!

i think that by removing the newcomers you would be removing the only class that amatuers qualify for.

i think this idea to move the 6yr olds is much better.
Why ruin young horses travelling them the length and breath of the country.
i have always believed that age classes should be about quality and this way i feel this will be recognised
