Moving the horses, but when to walk them round?

What does your horse wear for schooling?

New lad arrives on Wednesday (yay!) and as there is no room at the livery yard the other two are on I am moving the others back to our own place.

However, I have a problem. When I get home from work it is dark, ditto when I set off. I am off work on Wednesday but have no one to help me lead Ellie and Blue home.

So, do I move them tomorrow evening in the dark with OH, so just one horse to lead each or do I wait until Wednesday morning and take them both together on my own. Blue won't go by himself so can't take one and go back for the other and there is no one at all to help.

The journey is about a mile.

What would you do?

I'd wait till you can get someone to help you move them in Daylight, it's really not worth risking it in the dark or for you to walk two on your own, especially as one is a youngster.

Think I may have missed a post, what happened to the horse you bought not that long ago?

I'd go for the two of you in the dark with as much hi vis and flashing lights etc. as your Chrsitmas tree personally, because then, should anything untoward happen you have company and back up.

There really is no one to help during the day, none of my friends is the least bit horsey, most are petrified of them. OH is at work all Xmas and New Year apart from the bank holidays, and the transporter isn't working then, so doing it alone in daylight or in the dark with OH are the only options

Oh no, hope you have more luck with the new one. Have you gone for another youngster or a riding horse?

This pony I am getting is fine, have known him a while, ridden him, and love him to bits. Was so pleased when the opportunity to buy him came up. He is 8.

Don't forget to post piccys

I would lead both of them in the daylight. If they get on well enough, instead of having one in each hand can you not walk two in the one hand, and use a longer lead rope for one in case they don't have matching paces at walk. May be safer that way so you can keep them on one side of you and have visibility on the road, assuming you have roads to negotiate?

Absolutely no way would I move horses in the dark, I'm afraid.

Keep phoning until you find a transporter, or a box to hire

Could the new boy wait a little while as it sounds like you know the existing owners well? Then you could do it with the OH in the daylight on one of the bank holidays? Might not be super-good-xmassy behaviour but anywhere with horses should be open.

Or perhpas there is one of the livery yard staff who would go with you for a (hefty) Christmas tip?

Couldnt someone from your new or old yard help you in the daytime. Even the YO? How long will it take to walk there? I'm sure someone would help you if you pleaded

I wouldnt do it in the dark.

It will only take 10 minutes, if that to walk, old yard is diy, only three of us there, others live a fair way away and I seldom see them. They also usually have small children in tow. New place is my own field, so just me there!

Might have to stick new lad in by himself for a day until OH and I can walk the other two round in the day.

Thanks for suggestions, greatly appreciated.

That is what I would do. Much safer to have 2 of you in case of trouble with the youngster and obviously much better for him to have company on the road at his age. I certainly wouldn't take them in the dark except in an emergency.
