Looking at another yard today, but its 20mins away instead of the 5mins where she is now. Yard is a place that has been shut and being re opened by new people. Have lots of questions to ask when im there later!
Has anyone had there horses this far away and coped with the distance? When i used to walk to my current yard it would take me 15mins but i have my moped now which is the only reason i am considering new place. It would be no problem having her done for me ive been told. It has a flat paddock as a school and is in hacking distance to competition venue, although road isn't very nice riding to get there. The rest i will find out when im there!
If anyone can think of other stuff i could ask id be grateful, its been a years since i last moved and then it was to an established yard, this is empty as cant move in for 4wks yet.

My yard is a bit further than yours 30-40 mins, I've been there almost a year and although the yard is great it's just way too far. I am relocating next month and looking for something much closer, 15 mins max. I guess is depends how many times a day you want to go up. 20 mins doesn't sound a lot but if you are doing 2 return trips per day that's a lot of driving!

Mine is 20mins aways now, hes been 35/40 but that was just to far. 20 is perfectly do-able with transport. i have got someone turning out for me in the morning which is god-send so im only going up once a day. When i was looking at yards: turnout was a big question- how much, all year? And another question was about kids- i wanted a kid- free zone really so no-unaccompanied under 16's was a must.....but it all depends on your priorities really.Write a list of what things you 1) Absolutely need 2) would like to have but none-essential 3) deal breakers. so for me 1) absolutely need year round t/o and menage 2) would love indoor, off-road hacking, free horsebox storage 3) if the fields close for some months of the year, or severely restricted t/o , if nowhere to ride during winter evenings...game over im afraid

It all depends on your personal preferences, what you want and can live with and the price matches your budget.

As its a new yard, ask about hay/ straw /shaving supply- have they got it organised, will they be providing it, how much will it cost, is it a guaranteed supply all year (even in snow etc) so you have to buy from them?

Is there going to be a worming policy- on arrival?

Do they have the fields sorted and split, is there a 'sick' paddock(s) will the fields be mares/ geldings, is there a maximum herd size?

Does the yard have opening times? etc... will give you an idea how organised they are etc... i'd want my YO to be super on top of everything really, so if they cam across as a bit ummm ahhh havent thought about that yet....then i wouldnt be so keen really.

Well, had a look this afternoon. Nice place needs a little tlc, however some answers were a bit vague, they seem like they have lots of plans but nothing will be done until they move in, which is 1st april. They expect rest of people to move in fairly soon after that so it will be a work in progress.
Major concerns were lack of storage, security and field maintainance. I asked about harrowing, rolling etc and got a yes we are looking into it. ho hum.
Also electric is generators, never used them before so I don't know how that would work. There are lights outside the stables but none in them. Not sure I like that idea.
They have said they will be putting a cable in - like it was a easy job, i'm not sure it is!
Big muck heap there currently which will be moved - I asked whether it would be cleared on a regular basis, perhaps was the answer.
Basically they seem to be trying to do what I would like to do but I don't have the funds, they seem to be on a budget too.
There is a unit there which the bloke wants to use a garage as he is a mechanic, its right behind the stables.
Hacking is lovely, fields are nice, fencing is dodgy in places but that is first job so i've been told.
At the moment my instinct tells me its a non starter, going to ride the route on my moped on sun see how long it takes me - I went with a friend in her car today.
Moving there would be taking an awful lot on face value and I am very wary of false promises, so the search continues it seems!
