My horse has been living out since I've owned her, but we're about to move to a yard where she'll have her very own stable! It's also a much more organised place than the sharing-with-friends set up I've currently got! I'm a first time owner and have borrowed stable "stuff" as and when I've needed it, but now I need to get myself sorted. My list so far...

Haynets
Shallow feed bucket
Water bucket
Muck bucket
Broom
Little rake thing and bucket for mucking out (no idea what this is called!!!)
Bedding - the stable has rubber matting, so should 1 bale of shavings be enough to start with?
Salt lick
Big storage box

I also need to look into feed - she currently doesn't get any hard feed, but her workload will be increasing. Got haylage sorted for now, and can share a wheelbarrow... Have I missed anything obvious?

wheel barrow !!!! lol ok all sorts you have on list you dont need but good for you stepping out in to the livery world - i do not use haynets - just hate them lol - wheel barrow good fork( and test the weight and height as it matters) brush a light weight shovel( love you hanna for youres) and breath and settle in - enjoy the laughing and fun xxx

plastic shovel as mentioned is always useful for the dust piles you just can't get up or the splat of poo where the bedding isn't! If you want a cheaper alternative a dustpan and brush will do but you might get funny looks!

feed bins? just use plastic dustbins from DIY stores, garden centres. and with that a feed scoop!

Dependant on the size of stable you may need more than 1 bale of shaving if starting from scratch, as you will need to build banks as well as putting down the actual bed.

If the yard has feed a feed bin for you to use great but if not, and you do decide to give hard feed you may want to get something to store it in. Metal better than plastic as it prevents rodents eating through it!

Shavings fork! See, knew I'd miss something basic! And I hadn't even thought about a shovel!!

Regarding the shavings, I keep reading conflicting views on how much you should put down on rubber matting. Some people seem to make up full beds, while others just sprinkle some down, and some people don't use any! She's a well covered cob who's been used to sleeping on this hard ground, so it's mainly to soak up the mess....

Will it be a totally DIY yard? You might find, especially if not, that the yard has a few of these things and/or requires you to have certain types, e.g. a feed bucket they can stack with the others. Worth checking with the YM before you invest :-)
