Moving To Jersey With Horse??

After returning from my holiday in Jersey, I've decided I'd really like to move out there. I've always wanted to but never really thought about it too much. Now, if I was to go, my Ethel would have to come with me. So, does anyone know how much it would cost to take her over there and the details of what would have to happen regarding vetting etc if she wuld need to be checked over to make sure she is fit to travel etc. Would also like to know about livery yards there and also cost of living there etc.

So basically everything someone knows about moving abroad with a horse :)

Jersey is wonderful and I don't think you will have problems moving a horse there, but sadly you may have trouble moving yourself there.

but in summary unless you are related to people who already live there, have a family home there or have a very large amount of money to invest in Jersey you are unlikely to be able to move there.

Sorry to be so pesimistic, hope you find a way around the restrictions!

My auntie, grandad and grandads girlfriend all live over there so I am related to people who live there already, my auntie has been there for 22 years. Will this give me more chance of being able to move there? If I didnt already have family there I dont think I'd even think of moving there :p
 
Oh brilliant! It should be a lot easier then!

As far as I know it's hacking heaven for horses with lovely long beaches! There are some competitions on the island, I know there are a couple of BD shows a year, but other than that, I think people are used to coming to the UK for more shows.

I can't see why it would be a problem getting a horse over, there should be a number of professional transporters who make the trip regularly.
 
I used to work there and it is nice hacking out, but the roads are really narrow! On the downside, they are full of tourists, on the upside, all the tourists rent little 2CVs and a decent size warmblood presents a threat, so you just ride in the middle of the road!

Yeah they have St Ouens beach which is either 5miles or 15miles long (cant remeber :p ) which I was on on Monday evening and it seemed perfect for having a lovley long canter on :) They do have the restrictions on when you can ride on the beach though, I think its from the 1st of May to the 30th of September between 10.30am and 6pm you're not allowed to ride on the beach, but that would bother me too much as I'd still be going on the beach a lot more than I do now! And the island is so small wherever you are is normally in hacking distance of a beach :)

Not really too into shows, would like to do a few showjumping shows but only low level, so not too fussed about that.

Had a look at the link you gave me and so far cant find anything about moving horses over, but I'm sure I'll work it out once I decide if I'm gonna go or not :)

skewbaldagain - yeah I noticed some of the roads her narrow and most roads have lots of very sharp blind bends. Well Ethel is a 15.1hh TB .. still scary enough? :p
 
i was born and grew up in guernsey before leaving for uni - have yet to make it back but will do one day!
as already said, the biggest issue is going to be finding a way of moving yourself there, the easy part is the horse. i know the restrictions in guernsey are much tougher then jersey, but you will have to apply for a license, you may be lucky if you can live with a relative as then you can apply for a different license and it will be easier. and of course be prepared for the higher cost of living.
horse wise, as far as i know there are no restrictions. whenever we bought a horse from the 'mainland' we just had it shipped over, no vet checks or quarantine needed. also expect to be much more expensive for livery, feed, bedding etc. (10 years ago i was paying £7 for a bale of shavings!) there are a couple of firms that will take your horse over for you, or of course if you have your own transport you can just book a spot on the ferry.
hacking will be good but will mainly be on roads and or course beaches, but at least with the low speed limit you don't need to worry about idiots coming hurtling round country lanes.
if it is anything like guernsey there was some kind of competition on pretty much ever weekend all year round. bsja and the riding club will be the main ones, and they will cater to all levels (bsja ran small 70cm classess way before intro shows were introduced over here) and of course you see the same people at all the shows so you get to build up really good freindships and its all really friendly (something i really miss). and or course everything is within about a 40min drive!

You may still find it difficult to get a liscense even with family, as they are not direct family (i.e parent or partner). Are any of them local? I'd imagine your aunty has a local liscense now though being there for so long. Also if you have a key skill you can bring to the Island thats a great advantage.

As to bringing the beast over. No vetting needed prior to travel which in a trailer or 3.5tn can be done on the fast ferry - anything bigger needs to be on the conventional ferry that leaves Portsmouth at 9am ish and gets in to Jersey at 7pm ish. You can do it yourself or get someone to do it. There are generally always people back and forwarded.
