(Also posted on regional board, but there's more traffic through here I think....)

Long time lurker that rarely posts anything – but I’ve learned a lot from this forum and now I’m after some help from you knowledgeable lot 😊

We’re moving to North Yorkshire soon! EEK!!

It’s a huge move for me, husband, the dog, and 4 mini shetlands– we’re moving up from Bucks, and buying a place where I can finally have my boys at home! (and the husband’s vintage vehicles) I know it will be hard work, but I’m used to doing everything myself on basic DIY livery anyway, and it’s been a dream for so long it’s about time we made it a reality 😉

Firstly – hello to anyone in the area! We’re going to be just south of Thirsk, near Sessay (assuming the solicitors ever get on with sorting out the purchase, but hey ho!)

My biggest worry is replacing the wonderful support team I currently have for my boys – so I’m looking for recommendations for a new equine vet, farrier and chiropractor

Vets – from a quick google I quite like the look of Beningbrough Equine vets. My current practice is a small 2 vet practice, and I really like having the same vet every time, it’s much easier to have consistency, they know my boys and all of their issues inside out, and they know me, which is much easier when discussing sensible treatment options etc. (and although they have some toys, and can refer to specialists, not having everything at their fingertips means they’re more willing to discuss all of the options I think). However I do also see the benefit of having a slightly bigger practice, more back-up, more minds to look at issues, more tools etc to hand…….
Does anyone have any experience of any of the practices in the area (Beningbrough, Hambleton, Bishopton, Yorkshire Equine Practice etc) good or bad, that they’d be willing to share with me? (private message is fine!)

Farrier – this one is a real tough act to follow, my current farrier has literally been a lifesaver for my boys. I need to find someone who really understands barefoot horses, will watch the horses walk up before trimming (due to conformation issues and the resulting odd action in a couple of mine this really is essential) and understands that it’s not comfortable for tiny little people to hold their legs up on stands for rasping(!)…. 2 of mine have really odd feet at the moment following laminitis in previous years (slowly improving!), so I need to find someone who really knows their stuff, and might be willing to think outside the box a little bit. All 4 are very well behaved for the farrier. I want to stick with a farrier rather than a trimmer. Again – anyone you’d recommend (or avoid!)?

Less urgent, but I’ll also be looking for a new chiropractor for them too. I currently use a McTimoney Chiropractor, who they love and who has worked wonders with them, so I’m planning to go down the same route – but I’m open to ideas so again I’d be really grateful if you could share names of any you’ve used that you’d recommend please?

And also any recommendations for freelance grooms in the area that might be willing to do some ad-hoc pony care (on the very odd occasion that we go away!) – and/or dog sitting for the same reason?

And best tack/feed etc shops in the area? (not that I have any money to spend in them, but still worth knowing 😉)

Thank you!!!!!!!! (sorry that's an awful lot of questions!)

Thank you! Really good to know it's a nice village - we've looked at quite a few houses across North Yorks and their nearby local villages, and Sessay did have a nice feel to it, but you never really kow until you get there! 😊

You will be fine it's very quiet. I looked at that house myself actually online only though. 🤣

I cant give any local recommendations but I moved from down south to West Yorkshire and one thing I’ve noticed is everyone is SO friendly.

I have the horses at home now and I was worried about making friends but I posted on the local horsey Facebook and have met some lovely people

OP, go for Hambleton vets. I wont go into detail but I would absolutely NEVER recommend Benningborough. Ridings Equine can be good (if you get Jenny the owner she’s incredible).

Our vets are Galtres Vets , just down the A19 from you , beyond Easingwold at Flawith. Excellent independent vets , run by Malcolm Whitehead , plus about 8 younger vets. We have been with them for over 30 years . We love the personal touch , and really dislike vets that are either too Blingy [ Rainbow] or part of a chain. Galtres also are very good small animal vets , headed by Mrs Whitehead.
Farrier , some very good ones around [ ours is Simon Jackson , but I would be surprised if he s taking new clients.]
Tim Jarman for body work - again very popular and busy , so you may need to wait!
Welcome to North Yorks , I m sure you ll love it. Thirsk itself is good for shopping , you then have the North York Moors nearby - lovely hacking once you re up top of Sutton bank. Lots of agricultural shows, hunting, competitions, studs, racing, etc all on your door step.

McTimony try Angela Brock, I think she's sort of Skipton but covers a wide area
Lots of people round here get referred to Rainbow vets , York for more serious issues

Hambleton vets have very good reputation…very horsey area. I’m not too far away…bit further north. I know excellent vet dentists locally If needed. Hope your move goes smoothly.
Thank you! It'll probably depend on which vet I choose in the end, but will keep you in mind if needed! :)

That's really reassuring to know, thank you. Must admit, EVERYONE we've met while house hunting has been so friendly and welcoming, I was hoping it wasn't just because they want our money :p;)🤣 It sounds like it's a really horsey area, which is brilliant -I'mmore carriage driving than riding, andI think it's a fairly good area for that too
Really glad you've settled in well :)

Thank you - getting a lot of recommendations for Hambleton vets! 😊
Would you be willing to PM me general reasons why you'd avoid Beningbrough? No worries if not, just trying to get as much info as possible to help make a decision
Ridings Equine looks good but think we'll be outside of their zones, I will have a better look tomorrow though!

Thank you! Really appreciate all of the recommendations, I will do some digging!! Always think it's probably a good sign if they're always busy...... ☺️☺️ I hadn't spotted Galtres vets, but they do look good, and very close!

I can't wait! I'm slightly terrified as it's going to be a huge change, but we've always loved Yorkshire in general, and it's been an idea floating around for us for quite a few years now. We're finally in a position to do something about it! I know it's hard to tell until we're actually there - but I think the lifestyle will really suit us. Really excited about finding some decent dog walks and hacking in the moors and dales ('hacking' in the loosest sense with shetlands, usually on their long reins, at least it's good exercise for me! 🤣) And making new friends - that part doesn't feel like it'll be too difficult if most people are as friendly as those we've met already!
