Long time lurker that rarely posts anything – but I’ve learned a lot from this forum and now I’m after some help from you knowledgeable lot
We’re moving to North Yorkshire soon! EEK!!
It’s a huge move for me, husband, the dog, and 4 mini shetlands– we’re moving up from Bucks, and buying a place where I can finally have my boys at home! (and the husband’s vintage vehicles) I know it will be hard work, but I’m used to doing everything myself on basic DIY livery anyway, and it’s been a dream for so long it’s about time we made it a reality
Firstly – hello to anyone in the area! We’re going to be just south of Thirsk, near Sessay (assuming the solicitors ever get on with sorting out the purchase, but hey ho!)
My biggest worry is replacing the wonderful support team I currently have for my boys – so I’m looking for recommendations for a new equine vet, farrier and chiropractor
Vets – from a quick google I quite like the look of Beningbrough Equine vets. My current practice is a small 2 vet practice, and I really like having the same vet every time, it’s much easier to have consistency, they know my boys and all of their issues inside out, and they know me, which is much easier when discussing sensible treatment options etc. (and although they have some toys, and can refer to specialists, not having everything at their fingertips means they’re more willing to discuss all of the options I think). However I do also see the benefit of having a slightly bigger practice, more back-up, more minds to look at issues, more tools etc to hand…….
Does anyone have any experience of any of the practices in the area (Beningbrough, Hambleton, Bishopton, Yorkshire Equine Practice etc) good or bad, that they’d be willing to share with me? (private message is fine!)
Farrier – this one is a real tough act to follow, my current farrier has literally been a lifesaver for my boys. I need to find someone who really understands barefoot horses, will watch the horses walk up before trimming (due to conformation issues and the resulting odd action in a couple of mine this really is essential) and understands that it’s not comfortable for tiny little people to hold their legs up on stands for rasping(!)…. 2 of mine have really odd feet at the moment following laminitis in previous years (slowly improving!), so I need to find someone who really knows their stuff, and might be willing to think outside the box a little bit. All 4 are very well behaved for the farrier. I want to stick with a farrier rather than a trimmer. Again – anyone you’d recommend (or avoid!)?
Less urgent, but I’ll also be looking for a new chiropractor for them too. I currently use a McTimoney Chiropractor, who they love and who has worked wonders with them, so I’m planning to go down the same route – but I’m open to ideas so again I’d be really grateful if you could share names of any you’ve used that you’d recommend please?
And also any recommendations for freelance grooms in the area that might be willing to do some ad-hoc pony care (on the very odd occasion that we go away!) – and/or dog sitting for the same reason?
And best tack/feed etc shops in the area? (not that I have any money to spend in them, but still worth knowing )
Thank you!!!!!!!! (sorry that's an awful lot of questions!)
