Long time lurker that rarely posts anything – but I’ve learned a lot from this forum and now I’m after some help from you knowledgeable lot 😊

We’re moving to North Yorkshire soon! EEK!!

It’s a huge move for me, husband, the dog, and 4 mini shetlands– we’re moving up from Bucks, and buying a place where I can finally have my boys at home! (and the husband’s vintage vehicles) I know it will be hard work, but I’m used to doing everything myself on basic DIY livery anyway, and it’s been a dream for so long it’s about time we made it a reality 😉

Firstly – hello to anyone in the area! We’re going to be just south of Thirsk, near Sessay (assuming the solicitors ever get on with sorting out the purchase, but hey ho!)

My biggest worry is replacing the wonderful support team I currently have for my boys – so I’m looking for recommendations for a new equine vet, farrier and chiropractor

Vets – from a quick google I quite like the look of Beningbrough Equine vets. My current practice is a small 2 vet practice, and I really like having the same vet every time, it’s much easier to have consistency, they know my boys and all of their issues inside out, and they know me, which is much easier when discussing sensible treatment options etc. (and although they have some toys, and can refer to specialists, not having everything at their fingertips means they’re more willing to discuss all of the options I think). However I do also see the benefit of having a slightly bigger practice, more back-up, more minds to look at issues, more tools etc to hand…….
Does anyone have any experience of any of the practices in the area (Beningbrough, Hambleton, Bishopton, Yorkshire Equine Practice etc) good or bad, that they’d be willing to share with me? (private message is fine!)

Farrier – this one is a real tough act to follow, my current farrier has literally been a lifesaver for my boys. I need to find someone who really understands barefoot horses, will watch the horses walk up before trimming (due to conformation issues and the resulting odd action in a couple of mine this really is essential) and understands that it’s not comfortable for tiny little people to hold their legs up on stands for rasping(!)…. 2 of mine have really odd feet at the moment following laminitis in previous years (slowly improving!), so I need to find someone who really knows their stuff, and might be willing to think outside the box a little bit. All 4 are very well behaved for the farrier. I want to stick with a farrier rather than a trimmer. Again – anyone you’d recommend (or avoid!)?

Less urgent, but I’ll also be looking for a new chiropractor for them too. I currently use a McTimoney Chiropractor, who they love and who has worked wonders with them, so I’m planning to go down the same route – but I’m open to ideas so again I’d be really grateful if you could share names of any you’ve used that you’d recommend please?

And also any recommendations for freelance grooms in the area that might be willing to do some ad-hoc pony care (on the very odd occasion that we go away!) – and/or dog sitting for the same reason?

And best tack/feed etc shops in the area? (not that I have any money to spend in them, but still worth knowing 😉)

Thank you!!!!!!!! (sorry that's an awful lot of questions!)

I thought you would have had several replies - but as you haven't I will reply. I've had horses around Ripon.

Would recommend Bishopton Equine , friendly and knowledgeable vets who come out promptly - I know one of their vets lives outside Thirsk - so would imagine they would cover your area.

I have reservations about Minster Vets as they cover an extremely large area - and their on-call Vet has been miles away when needed.

For MCTimoney consultant - Tim Jarman (https://www.timjarman.co.uk/) is excellent - however is extremely popular and may not be taking on new clients - Kathy Boyer (https://www.kbequinetherapy.co.uk/) is based in Thirsk and although not McTimoney may be an alternative - but again busy.

Farrier - think you're out of the area my knowledge covers

Tack/ feed shops - the ones I know you have Mllbry Hill at Richmond. Stokesley and Sutton - on - Forest. Beavers in Harrogate has a wonderful selection - but £££.

Thank you! :) I had posted in Tack Room too as I know there's more traffic there, and had a few replies, but I'm very grateful for you getting back to me!
I think Bishopton Equine may be a winner, you're not the first to recommend them, I think they do cover the area (as does their small animal group, so that would work for the dog too!)
And thank you for ideas on 'bodyworkers' - I'm not tied to McTimoney (just a case of sticking with what I know I suppose!) - even if they're busy at least it's a starting point, so that's great :)
I get the impression most things in Harrogate can be a bit £££ ;)🤣 but Beavers sounds like it needs a visit at some point!
Thanks for your help, very much appreciated!

Hello from York! I also moved up here recently as DH is in the army and whilst he is from here, he was absolutely no help on the horsey side of things. So I can fully sympathise with leaving your team of experts!

No idea if they cover your area but popping down who I use just in case.

Vets - I don't know if they cover your area but Ridings are absolutely brilliant. Avoid Minster.

Farrier - I use Ryan Batty who watches them trot up. My mare only has fronts on but used to be barefoot (with my farrier back home) but I'm very happy with her back feet.

Physio - Paula Drury. Again watches them trot up, works very closely with vets.

It's a shame you're not closer as I would happily babysit some shetlands! Been trying to find one to share for my toddler but no one seems to have them round here! I know at least 5 available back in Surrey.

Hi! 😃 That's brilliant, thank you so much! Will have a look into Ridings vets and Ryan and Paula
Ah that's a shame - but hope you manage to find a little one for your toddler soon 🙂

Sophie Minikin is in Boroughbridge
, and is McTimony. Hope the move is going well😁
Brilliant thank you!!
We're not quite there yet, but all being well we'll be on the move within the next couple of weeks! 😱🥳
Going through that awful phase at the moment of saying goodbye to all my current 'pros', farrier last week, chiropractor and vet yesterday 😢 really going to miss them all, that's by far the hardest part of leaving

really looking forward to doing lots of exploring!!

Let us know when you've made it up here and you can come visiting!

Our farrier is Georgie Atkinson (was Jackson), she's very good and sympathetic. She's quite young (well, twenties) but learned from her dad and I would say is very switched on. Vet is Baker McVeigh in Malton, they do a lot of racehorse work and I've found them to be pragmatic, reasonably priced, and easy to get hold of in an emergency. Physio is Karina at Tadcaster Equine Physiotherapy. The one thing I have really struggled with is finding a saddler, but I've recently had Sarah Rymer out and been pleased with her. Some of those people might be a bit too far East for you but it can't hurt to ask - I don't really know how big an area they operate over.

ETA - I mean saddle fitter, don't I. Sorry!

Everyone on my yard uses Sarah and I’ve used her as a stop gap between seeing Sbloom. She’s fab.

Sarah travels miles so if you’re flexible with dates I’m sure she’d be able to see you OP.
