Hi,

I am moving to the South of the county in the Autumn and I was wondering if I could pick your brains about the cost of keeping a horse in the area so I have a rough idea before I leap in!

Exactly where I will live will be dependent on where I find a job but I will be looking in Ross, Hereford, Monmouth and Abergavenny. Broad area I know but any information would be gratefully received!

Also recommendations for a good farrier.

Thank you in advance.

Oohhh welcome to the area. I'm in Monmouth but have had my horses in S Herefordshire/Ross/Forest of Dean area for 20-odd years until finally having them at home :)

I've paid between £25-30 pw DIY, to £150pcm for assisted livery( turned out on weekdays). I have looked at a lot of yards so when you are closer to the time feel free to ask - I covered about a 25 mile radius from Monmouth in most directions looking for the perfect place ;)

Monmouthshire and Herefordshire both have Facebook groups which are good for recommendations :)

Welcome to the area! - we moved to near Hereford nearly 2 years ago and have a livery yard there - we charge £45 per week including ad-lib haylage, £100 a week for full livery to include all care, feed, bedding but not exercise. We have very good facilities - large arena and jumps, Monarch stables, lots of grazing - all post and rail - and off-road riding. You can certainly get cheaper than that, depends on what facilities you require.

It is well worth looking on Hereford Equestrian, or advertising your requirements on there. They are free to advertise on and plenty of people locally use it.

Thank you Milliepops. And I will take you up on that offer when the time comes.

Am very excited to be moving. I would move there tomorrow if I could! I currently live on the west coast of Wales so am trading in one beautiful area for another!

As was mentioned, Hereford Equestrian web page is well worth a look and lots of FaceBook pages for the area / Riding Clubs such as Vale of Usk, Y Fenni etc. x
