Hello,
I'm new to this forum so hopefully I'm doing this right! We are in the process of buying a house in the Newbury area and later in the year will be moving our horse and pony. The place we are hopefully buying has land and a barn which I can convert for stables, but I could really do with some good local knowledge on a few things. Can anyone give me some pointers on the following:
(a) a company that does stabling, fencing etc.
(b) somewhere good to get feed, hay, shavings, etc.
(c) someone that will remove my muck heap
(d) somewhere that has a school (indoor or outdoor) that I can hire occasionally by the hour
(e) anything else you think might be useful. I've kept horses for 30 years in Surrey and know it inside out, but am feeling a bit lost moving to a new place!
Thanks so much,
Niki.

I'm not far from Newbury
(a) a company that does stabling, fencing etc.
There is a Scats store next to Sainsbury in Newbury sells feed, bedding ,rugs, clothing, fencing etc not bad value

(b) somewhere good to get feed, hay, shavings, etc.
Amners farm but thats more Reading way local tack shop I'm sure will tell you.

(c) someone that will remove my muck heap
Sorry can't help spread our own

(d) somewhere that has a school (indoor or outdoor) that I can hire occasionally by the hour

Again sorry to far to know anything useful on that score

Its very horsey around there and surrounding areas so I'm sure people on here can be of more help than me.

Good luck with the move

Although I'm not from Newbury I nearly moved there a few years ago (it all fell through in the end) and did some of the research you're talking about. There's a country store (like Countrywide, but a different name, something like Scrubs) just off the A339 near Sainsbury's, it seemed quite cheap, they also had a big advertising board with lots of the services you mention advertised on there so worth a look I'd say. I also contacted the local riding clubs (google them and they have contact details) - Tadley and District and Berkshire Riding club. Tadley were really helpful and e-mailed me a load of stuff.
A nice local centre was Hamstead Growers Equestrian, they sell feed as well. http://www.hamsteadgrowersequestrian.co.uk/

Hi there
It depends really which side of Newbury you are moving to.

Feed Merchants- Threshers Barn, (Thatcham), Banks Doulton(Hermitage), another place at Beenham (just off the A4 towards Reading) cant think of the name but it sells a good range of feeds and bedding and Scats (Newbury town centre).

Fencing- There are a few local companies. You would probably find some advertising in Scats. Blacks at Padworth do fencing and stabling I think.

Fairoak Grange at Ashford Hill rent their arenas(indoor and outdoor) They have a website which tell you about their facilities. That would be ok if you were the Reading side of Newbury.
Muck heap is more tricky- you will need to ask around for a local farmer!

Good luck with the move.

Thanks so much to darkangel1243 and annagain - these suggestions are really useful. Hamstead Growers look especially good - I'll pay a visit to them and Scats as they are both nearby. Plus get in contact with the riding clubs as well.
Much appreciated!

OK - here goes:

Fencing - your best bet is McVeigh Parker, based in Bradfield Southend.

Feed etc. - loads of options....I buy my feed & shavings from Frontier who are in Hermitage and get my hay from a local farmer. Other places, as well as those already mentioned, are Total Equestrian in Beenham and Cummins who are on the road between Hermitage & Newbury.

Local Vets - McGonnall & Gillat are excellent: www.horse-vets.com
There's also O'Gormans in Newbury, Valley Equine in Lambourn, Coach House in Ball Hill.

Berkshire County Riding Club are local to Newbury.....other nearby clubs include Tadley District RC & South Oxon RC.

Tack shops - Threshers Barn in Thatcham, Total Equestrian in Beenham, Centell Saddlery at Hall Place in Tilehurst, the Stable Door in Burghfield Common, Inches at Hannington and Calcutts which is a short hop down the A34 at Sutton Scotney.

That's all I can think of for now - if you need to know anything else just ask.

Good luck with the move!!!

Brilliant, thanks chestnut_fan and yes I must remember to switch vets before I move - last time I moved my horse she tripped and cut herself badly (wasn't paying attention to where she was going!) an hour after getting there and had to get an emergency call out from a vet I didn't know!
Thanks again everyone!
Niki.
