We are seriously considering Yorkshire as our next move.
Can anyone give me pointers of good horsey areas/good yards/good hacking areas to look at or even areas to avoid!

There's only me and my other half but this move would be our family home for when we start thinking about children.

We have family in Malton but not tied to any particular area. And if anyone can give a rough indication of prices (part/assisted DIY livery, farriers, hay etc) that would be great. I'm currently near London so praying it's cheaper ?

York is a more expensive area, but very beautiful.

We are further south/west, but still commutable. Everything is a lot cheaper, including houses with land/stables. You could get set up to keep your horses at home for under 400K.

Yorkshire is a big county. The highest property prices are usually in N.Yorks, especially in the National Park. Do you want to live within easy travelling distance of Malton, or would you prefer to be a bit further away? Prices across the whole of Yorkshire are considerably lower than in and around London.
The Greater Manchester/W. Yorks border is a very horsey area as is S. Yorks, where there is a really good bridleways network.

I'm North of York in the Castle Howard sort of area, the hacking is lovely and there is easy access up to the moors with a trailer or box. Lots of verges etc to park on in the summer. Agreed about the A64, it's a pain in the summer, particularly on a Friday afternoon, but that said until Covid struck I was using it to get to and from work (in York) every day without any major problems. House prices are strangely variable by village; the "posh" ones are very spendy but less fashionable ones like Great Barugh seem to have some bargains (we didn't go for that area in the end as we needed to be slightly further West for OH's commute).

It is much cheaper than near London! I pay a bit over £60pw for assisted DIY including hay and basic feed (and bedding in winter, although they don't come in much) and farrier is £70 for a full set + road nails. That's on the cheaper end for farriers, the more pricey one locally is £90 for the same. There are several active riding clubs in the area (although I believe some are better than others) and (if it's your thing) plenty of people seem to hunt.

if you want children one thing to think about is schools - have a look at the secondaries in particular and think about how you will get them there. Check whether there are school buses and whether they run near you. I know secondary school is a long time away for your as-yet hypothetical children but it's worth a bit of a thought at least.

Drop me a message if you have any specific questions, happy to tell you what I know!

We are on the outskirts of York, it really depends from yard to yard which areas are you looking at? We can then tell you what the traffic is like and yards etc.

Get in touch with Janet at Ride Yorkshire, wherever you end up (or before, she will be able to tell you all there is to know about the best hacking and best places to be).

You can find them on Facebook or I can give you contact info if you want to pm me.

I run a yard just south of Malton and have children in primary school locally.
What sort of yard are you looking for? facilities? do you mainly hack or are you looking for somewhere more competitive?
