Moving water

I had one of these attached to a 100m length of hose. I could get my car pretty close, but if not a small battery and the version of this is with crocodile clips would work. I used to put the pump in near the top so it didn't pick up all the silt from the bottom and I used to fill a huge trough each week. I didn't have running water but was allowed access to the trough next door.

We have to go about 50 yards and just carry water in big water bottles in a wheelbarrow.

Everyone seems to use the tractor to put water in their paddocks but I'm worried about it running out of diesel as it will have to then be repaired by a mechanic.

Right decision made. We’re going to clean it out. Carefully!!
Be very careful. My very big trough which collects water off the roof is ancient, probably older thane me and we have had to seal holes many times. Silt has been building up now for several years so this year as it was nearly empty I tipped it over and hosed it out. Result it now leaks and we can't seem to stop it. Think I am going to have to resort to a pond liner. Can't afford to replace it.

Can you drive to the field and do you have a tow bar? You could get an IBC on a trailer, and fit it with a small trough with a ballcock so that it keeps filling for a while until you take the trailer away to refill somewhere you have a tap/hose. Like in this picture.

No she’d never allow it plus I don’t have a tow bar.

I use a bucket and funnel to fill those caravan water thingies, then drag them to the field with the handle. The containers I have are 25 litre and have a handy side opening as well as on top. I can just manage to lift them on to an old tyre which has my trugs inside
Its the easiest way Ive found

I've got an old bath (taps removed obvs.) that fills from the barn roof or a hose if there's not enough rain. I got it free from a house clearance chap.

Bath isn't big enough for us. My trough is way bigger and deeper. It holds a lot of water off the roof of our barn which we bale out and store in buckets with lids.

Yikes! Sure it isn't a swimming pool? Big troughs sometimes come up at farm sales. Buy an old tank (no, not the kind with tracks - I know someone is thinking that!) and cut it in half?

Again thank you all! I manned up and cleaned out the wretched thing as worked out how to wedge the refiller. There was an inch of green gunk in the bottom! Pic doesn’t show huge improvement but it is loads better.
