Further to all my moaning (sorry) about the welfare issues at my current yard, I am moving tomorrow to a fab place - I'm so happy !! HURRAH !!!

BUT - I still have to get out of my current yard, and therein lies the "issue". I told the YO two weeks ago that I was leaving, as I was not prepared to have his wife screaming at me, and that's not an exageration (sp) and another story. I confirmed this wednesday that I would be leaving on saturday, and he started bellowing about "4 weeks notice". I explained that two weeks had gone, and under the circumstances, didn't he want to just let me go as he obviously didn't want me there (re welfare issues). So he relented and said I could pay 2 weeks notice. Which in my book IS the full four weeks, but hey ho.

So two days ago, he hands us the bill. At the bottom he has charged us "4 weeks livery in lieu of notice". On top of payment to tomorrow. We were dumbfounded tbh. A bill for £177, which we know should be £127, inclusive of straw and stuff. Anyway, this YO has a nasty side, and has been known to block people in with tractors and childish stuff like that *sigh*. I am dreading tomorrow, but also really excited for when we actually get my pony out. Everything else has gone (even 30 bags of straw).

Can he hold my pony to ransom (if he dare) I guess is the bottom line. I am ready to call the cops if I need to.......it's been suggested we pay the full whack by cheque and then cancel it, but I'm not too happy. We are just going to present a cheque for what we owe, and try to calmly walk away, and to the horsebox on the road (i.e. not in the yard).

God this is way too childish, playing silly buggers at his age........

Sounds like he is being an imbecile, and from a grown man, it is truly amazing how some people behave, blocking people in indeed!
Well I hope it goes well, I would pay what you owe, no more, no less, no argument (at least there shouldn't be).
I do hope it goes well, I recall your other posts on this yard and I am very pleased for you that you have found elsewhere, good luck

thankyou so much ! I have got butterflies and haven't slept well since he gave us that bill. I've even considered going into the police station to make them aware. Urgghhhh.

You have all my sympathy, I left a yard a few years ago under a cloud, it was awful, why do some YO's have to be such silly sods? Will your YO accept a cheque do you think? Wishing you luck, hope it goes OK, stay cool!!

well he doesn't have a lot of choice re the cheque. He has been known to deny payment before (via cheque which had to be traced thru a bank), and he will not sign our bill as paid, which we insist on usually. So a cheque it is, at least we can trace it. God it's all so complicated.

And we pay cash dead on the nail he gives us the bill, yet others pay up to a year late. *sigh*

Sounds sensible in what you are doing and I wish great joy in your new yard. But have police number next to you just in case the said dipstick tries to stop you moving your pony and get a reciept for the cheque you give him and have it dated.

I'm not saying this is the case here, as clearly it isn't, but refusing to let someone leave until they pay the bill isn't really childish is it? Once the livery has left, what are the chances of actually seeing the livery, or indeed the owed money again?

Can you not give the 'amount you owe' in cheque form to another livery to give to MM (Mad Man)? Then you can just leave without seeing him??

OMG, I wish I could. But as soon as he sees the horsebox (and trust me they use binoculars) , he'll be there, probably with tractor at the ready. I know I won't be able to get boy out till the bill is settled. I think we will tell him to take us to the small claims court if he really has a problem. i suppose I am thinking breach of the peace in waiting.. hmmm. Life is too damned short.

You might not like this but I am saying it with your best interests at heart, this guy sounds like a loon... if you can afford it just pay him what he thinks you owe. I know it isn't fair or reasonable but he and his wife don't sound like they have either of those traits in abundance. Ultimately it may be worth it just for your own and your pony's safety.

Loving the hack idea too, we have decided to do that. The horsebox will be way down the road. I'll pay what I owe somehow and just leave him to blow up in private. I am sooo looking forward to being in the new yard, just very nervous about getting this bit done.

Thanks so much ! Keep you posted.

PLEASE DONT WRITE A CHEQUE AND THEN CANCELL IT - seriously if this situation escalates (sp) you will not have a leg to stand on and he will have a pretty good case over you

No no no, I dismissed that idea as soon as it was mentioned - a nasty and aggressive thing to do. I owe money, and I will make damned sure I pay it.

Good luck and I hope you don't get any grief from the loony, life is relatively short and precious so why do people make such stupid problems. As I have got older it becomes more clear how we should enjoy ourselves and other people, since starting riding 15mnths ago I have made loads of new friends including the ones on forums. Your soon to be EX YO needs to get a life IMHO.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

first installment....... just back from the yard, Shy turned out, stable empty and immaculate...idiot corners me and it goes like this;

"have you got the cash ? I won't take cheques any more as my accountant has told me not to any more."

"No we are paying when we leave, and it is by cheque I think. You'll have to speak to OH"

"well I won't take cheques anymore, can you nip into town and draw the cash out before the bank closes ?"

"speak to my husband"

Liar liar pants on fire, how long will your nose grow this avo ?? hehehehe, it's gonna get good !

had to wait till the horsebox is able to get there...two-ish.....so hack starts at one-ish. God am i nervous, feel sick. Thanks so much for your support everyone, I've been repeating these messages to hubs, and we've been having a good laugh, which has helped so much !!!

HURRAH !!! WE DID IT !!!

It involved the police, as I suspected it would, as he tried to block the box with his tractor. It was funny really cos his mates, who I have always got on with, refused to help the stupid idiot. What a rant that man has on him, evil and totally ott. But yes, I did ride out of the yard, to what I thought was a hidden, safe place - wrong.

Anyway, shy is safely tucked away in his new stable with his new mates on either side. I was soooooo proud that he just went into the box (his second time) following carrots, and came out just as easily.

Thankyou sooooooooooo much for your support, you have all really helped me get thru this. The new YO told me that he does this with practically every livery who leaves - very odd behaviour.

I'm off to grab a sleep now, totally exhausted. sm x

Well done :) You were lucky the police agreed to get involved - often they refuse as it's a civil matter. Good Luck at your new yard :D

Can't you go out for a very long hack and not come back?

That's a good idea! The horsebox could be parked not far away. You could take as much of your stuff either by car beforehand or you could carry the not too heavy stuff by hand! Wow, we are a sneaky lot aren't we? :p :D

Edited: oops! didn't see the three pages bit and that you had already done it! Well done!

Well done, I was thinking about you today.

The last livery yard I left, about 10 years ago, I arrived at the yard to move my horses on the appointed day to find that the YO had taken ALL of my stuff, tack, rugs, feed, and thrown it out on the yard in the mud. I was fully paid up too. It was a bit like Hotel California....you check out any time you like but you can never leave...

Hope you had a good rest!

Well done :)

You will probably sleep very well tonight, so will Shy - glad he is nicely settled.

Hope it all becomes so much more enjoyable for you now - as it should be.

Hope you got on ok, I left a yard for a super new yard but when I left my livery was up to date by direct debit so she owed me money was I worried no best thing I ever did she did send me a cheque less £50 for leaving a bit of mud on yard by my trailer but I let that go sad woman any problem get the police pay by cheque then cancell it good luck.
