Hi I am going to be moving my horse to a new yard ASAP, my question is should I give notice to my current yard? The problem is I dont think they will take the news too well, no real reason but they had a bit of a sulk at my friend when she decided to move yards and would rather not have to be akward around them for the next couple of weeks, would rather tell them and go. My horse is on 24/7 turnout and there is 12 other horses in her field so its not like I am dropping them in it or anything, I took her on originally as a loan horse before I bought her and have never had any sort of agreement done with the yard, but would you want notice if it was your yard?

Yes give them their notice.
There is technically an agreement between you and the yard if you have been paying monthly livery therfore a months notice is standard.

Give them the months notice and money, then go :) Simple.

I can't think why you would actually have to 'work' your notice period unless you really want to. If YO has cash in their grubby paw then why should it make a difference to them one way or another? It is to their advantage really, you go, new one comes in and they are getting paid twice for that time.

If you have somewhere else lined up, want to go then the loss of a months livery is a small price to pay for a quiet life.

As a YO if people move on then they move on, I don't ask for reasons, they give their notice (as per contract) but I never hold them to it, and I refund their unused days because I am nice like that :D

Good Luck.

Normally however often you'd pay is the amount of notice you need to give, such as if you pay weekly, a weeks notice, or if you pay monthly, you should give a months notice. Even though you've not got any contract, it is common courtesy really and the horse world is so small, you don't want to give yourself a bad name plus you may one day need to return there.

def give them your notice. it's bad form to leave a yard suddenly, a month at least gives them a chance to find a new livery to replace you. Agree with the other poster, its easy to get a bad name around yards and reputations (whether justified or not) follow.

If i was a yard owner i would be wary taking on a livery who i'd heard had left another yard in the lurch

slightly different circumstances but I gave mine a weeks notice - tbf, they gave me a months notice to find somewhere else.
otherwise I would have given the notice stated in my contract

If your in no rush and the yard your at has decent facilities etc then id give then a few weeks to a months notice. I moved a few weeks ago and gave them about 3 days notice!!! It was unintential though!! Basically the facilities were cr*p and i didnt want my horse getting injured so i said i was thinking of moving, then a few days later i said i defo was so then they said that if my horse was moving then i wasnt allowed to work there anymore so i decided to leave 2 days later  Glad to be outa that place!!
