I recently moved from a yard I was having some issues at. Fields weren’t being poo picked, school was in need of resurfacing, fly spray not being applied and left out in the extreme heat. On a plus it was a very laid back yard, amazing hacking which is my favourite thing to do & all year turnout which my horse loves.
I moved to a small yard which is very modern, the people are nice but they don’t allow turnout in the winter only in turnout pens and its not as laid back as where I previously was. I just haven’t settled in very well.
Im looking to move but unsure if I should just go back to my original yard or look elsewhere ?

Has the staffing at your previous yard changed significantly? I mean, you’re just going to encounter the same issues as previously. I’d say great hacking and all year round turnout are top priorities for many people. Do you use the school much?

In the past I moved and then moved back to my previous yards within 5 or 6 weeks.

It still had the same issues but it was a case of better the devil you know. It was supposed to be temporary whilst I found another new yard but I stayed another 2 and a bit years in the end.

I found that in leaving and returning, I found a new perspective - or knew, things could be worse :D

They have some new grooms which would obviously help & I’m thinking even if I helped out more with poo picking etc.
I do use the school but neither me or my horse really enjoy it, only use it as he is very green. I didn’t realise how limited the turnout would be at the new place and feel bad my horse can’t have a good canter around a field if he wanted too.

I can’t fault the new yard in care at all just the turnout and a case of not feeling as comfortable.
Yes better the devil you know, it’s made me realise how much I took all year turnout for granted before.

I would go back without hesitation. You still get the hacking and your horse has her turnout. There will always be compromises to be made. There are a few things which I would like to be different at my yard but they aren't and won't be so I have to overlook them. The things which are most important to me and my horse are in place ie 24/7 freedom in the YO's small herd with a run in barn, YOs who treat my horse as their own and excellent hacking.

Yes it’s made me realise how important turnout it. Whilst my horse isn’t unhappy where he is I think it’s pretty unnatural for a horse to not be able to have a canter in their field. The summer was my main issue with them being left out but I can’t just put the extra time in to ensure he is out the sun, small price to pay I guess.
