After some advice regarding potential supplement to feed to help with tendon damage.

Background - 8 year old TB recently diagnosed with tear to DDFT (hind). Prognosis is guarded but vets believe good chance will come back into same level of work (schooling/hacking - not competitive). X-ray, ultrasound, MRI and PRP injections last week. Just started box rest stage. Re-scan in a month to see how tendon is healing.

Now I know and understand nothing will be better than time and correct rehab; vets have promised full rehab program and scans to monitor.

My question is a common one, that no doubt will divide opinion, but is there anything I can introduce to help the tendon heal well and correctly? Reading previous threads I see MSM is sometimes used in soft tissue repair. Is this something that I could consider? I've also seen Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCL) recommended for soft tissues.

Any and all advice welcome.

I gave both my horses MSM 10000 when they did their sdft's. Whether it made a difference or not who can rightly say for sure. But neither have taken a lame step since and one of them literally tore his tendon into 2 pieces.

Same as EKW, fed it to mine and still sound but unless you have one to compare to you won't know! It's cheap enough to feed as a precaution

EKW - was that that the Glucosamine + MSM?

Thanks both for sharing experiences. Did you feed during box rest stage and during the rehab? Have you continued to feed since?

I feed mine 100% msm one horse had a bad suspensory tear in 2015 and had no problems since and I just give it to my other horse as he had changes in the navicular bone with some soft tissue damage in the feet and he is sound and barefoot, and they are both in early teens so I think it doesn't do any harm to feed it's supposed to help keep the soft tissue healthy nd it's not expensive, natural horse supplies on line sell it I tend to buy all my supplements from them they are hard to beat price wise.

I fed MSM during box rest and for about 6 months afterwards, I put him on a joint supplement after that (equimins flexijoint)

Friend used it after an incorrectly rehabbed DDFT injury, (left in the box instead of walked out) and left with a sticky tendon sheath. The horse was sound when on it and not when not on it, it was very marked.

My vet (a top team/competition vet) once said to me that the only supplement he'd recommend feeding was MSM. I think this was in a discussion about joint supplements but he also put her on MSM when she had a small ligament injury. I get mine from Aviform Nutrition, great value and super quick delivery. She has remained on MSM ever since (interestingly I used to feed Cortaflex or Superflex and noticed no difference when swapping to just the MSM apart from to my bank balance :D).
